This again is more of a personal post, so if that's not your bag, tune out now.
Yesterday, I spoke of not waiting until New Years to make resolutions. It's ironic... Ironic because usually, a short while after midnight, after drinking champaigne, swapping spit, saying good riddance to the old, and ushering in the new year; I typically excuse myself for about a half hour or so. It's during this time that I go through my telephone and send out individual happy new years wishes via text message. Sure, it is not terribly personal, but it is my way of reaching out to those I care about that I've not taken the time to keep in touch with over the course of the past year.
This has become somewhat of a tradition of mine. Sometimes, people call me right back. Other times, I get a return text message, and other times, I hear from the people a day or so later.
One girl in particular is typically on that list... a dear friend of mine named Tierney. She played on my co-ed soccer team, as I first met her through my best drinking buddy Sandy. Tierney and I immediately hit it off. God help us, but our minds worked very similar. She was brilliant, such a beautiful mind she had. We spent many a day and evening talking stuff that people did not normally talk about... Deeper, more philosophical and/or conceptual conversations were the norm with us. People often had a difficult time keeping up, as one either was on that wave length or they were not...
Anyway, fast forwarding a bit... she moved away a few years ago to "chase her dream." I admired that in her; when she knew what she wanted, she acted. It was then that we began conversing, for the most part twice a year... on July 4th and New Years Eve. I missed the 4th this year...
Yesterday evening, Sandy calls me... asks me if I've heard. Of course, I didn't as my head has been lodged up my ass as of late from a social standpoint. I'm assuming she's going to give me some great news - proposal, with child... something of that sort.
Turns out Tierney was in an auto accident on Wednesday night. Both she and her boyfriend died as a result of injury from said accident. Sadly enough, I'll be spending new years eve with her, but at the funeral home... not via our traditional phone conversation. T - I'm sorry I waited, you're always on my mind and a topic of conversation in the group... I can only hope you knew how beautiful and special you were and are.
Love ya angel...

Resolve |
Two things I have said come to mind as I write this post. First, I said that last post was most likely my last post of the year... I've also went on the record many times over stating I am against the whole new years resolution thing. If you want to do something, why wait for the New Year, right?
The other side of that coin is, why put off a resolution just because it's the new year, and thus fashionable, right? So here I am with a decision, wait til it's no longer fashionable to set goals to better my life, or start on the turn of the new year.
Actually, just as most things in life, this is not an "either-or" scenario... In fact, I have more choices than just wait or resolve at new years. I can make the New Years Eve Eve resolutions. In fact, I will, because that's what the BeerGuy would be inclined to do.

First and foremost, I resolve to learn from the mistakes I've made over the past 363.5 days. Trust me when I say that I've made a lot of them, and not just over the last majority of the year either. I've made a lifetime of mistakes. I'm probably a better person for making them too, but one would normally say such things in the eyes of failure, right?
No seriously here... it's perfectly acceptable to make mistakes... in life, in poker. Mistakes happen. To err is human. I'm human, thus I make mistakes. If I could resolve to be perfect, to plan and execute flawlessly every day, every time, I'd do so. I can't, however, deliver on such things. So, instead, I resolve to learn from my mistakes.
To learn from them requires me to have an open mind. It also requires me to acknowledge my error, face it, and look for a way to either not repeat it, or to capitalize on it in the future. Truth be told, a BeerGuy with an open mind is dangerous... Look out world!
Specifically, I need to identify situations that are not profitable or beneficial, and rid myself of them sooner - get away from those who do not have my interest at heart - fold bad draws... nuff said, you get the point - I resolve to learn from my mistakes.
Also, I am committing to improve upon my bankroll management skills, as inspired by Jerry - who will be going to Oz to represent the Blogger Poker Tour at the Aussie Millions. I've been good, but not great at managing my bankroll. Making this a priority will lead to both becoming a better player, and leading a better life. Thinking about the games I play - be it level or likelyhood for profitability, the activities I participate in (is the cost/potential benefit worth the investment of time, money, or heart) will do nothing but benefit me in the long run.
Finally, I resolve to breath... and to embrace the moment. I too often get caught up looking too far out or looking back, and don't necessarily appreciate what is going on right now, til after it's long past. Slowing down, taking time to enjoy myself is clearly in order.
Have a great new years celebration everyone!

More on CheckRayz in 2007... |
Yesterday, I started discussing what one can expect from CheckRayz in 2007. Today, after digesting some of that talk, I'd like to continue discussing what I have planned for CheckRayz next year...

Freerolls
I do plan to offer Freerolls on a regular basis. In fact, it is safe to assume that I will be increasing the number of freerolls we have in 2007 up from 2006. Most of my freerolls, however, will be in the form of either CheckRayz satellite freerolls (a way to win a seat into our buyin events), satellite freerolls into larger events (10K or 20K guaranteed tournaments, wsop qualifiers, etc), or promotional freerolls (deposit and play x number of hands to be eligable).
This is not to say that I won't, on occasion, hold a straight up, no strings attached freeroll poker tournament. However, tourneys of that nature will be the exception... not the rule. Surely, there will be one or two rooms that will be strictly freeroll rooms. Additionally, I will not abandon the "introductory freeroll" concept I started in 2006, where we introduce a new poker room via a private, no strings attached freeroll poker tourney.
Rakeback
Starting in 2007 I will begin offering rakeback to our members... Just a wild guess here, but I believe that I will begin offering it with the International Group (non-US players), as there's one room we are with that I know of who is set up to make rakeback easier. I will work quickly to get the US Players of CheckRayz onboard with this as soon as possible as well... It's a matter of negotiating a favorable rake, ensuring this occurs automatically (I do not wish to play middleman for $$$), and also ensuring that the room I select is not going to go away/dry up anytime soon.
Forum
Beginning in early 2007, we will be adding our own poker forum to the CheckRayz site. This forum "can" be for talking poker and what not, but will typically be an additional means for me to support questions our players have, and an additional means for me to get news to our membership. I DO NOT envision having a "forum freeroll" EVER... That idea is just straight up gay if you ask me, especially when we're not a "forum" per se. This will also be a good place to hang out and talk, share strategy, exchange ideas, etc.
Changes to the Leaderboard
I think I want to change the leaderboard scoring. I'm not yet 100% certain how I want to adjust this, but size (of the tournament field) will matter. What I mean by this is that winning a 20 person tournament will be weighted heavier than winning a 15 person tourney. I do not yet have plans to award leaderboard points to satellite freerolls, but I reserve the right to change my mind at a later date, which will be announced in advance should I choose to do so. In fact, IF I award Leaderboard Points for freerolls, most likely their will be a seperate freeroll tour of sorts started.
Lots of change to digest there... I plan to make a huge splash in 2007 with CheckRayz... Stay tuned and keep supporting!

More 2007 CheckRayz Poker Talk |
1 holiday down, another to go... and then Aussie here I come! Now that the excitement has settled in a bit, and the rush of Christmas is behind me, I want to talk a bit about the CheckRayz Poker Tour in the year 2007.
For starters, I have indicated that we're continuing the overall CheckRayz Leaderboard Poker Tour. There will be some key additions to the Tour, which we'll discuss below.

Christmas gifts n poker chips only at 5stardeal.
First of all, perhaps the most noticable of all the changes, is that there will be two distinctly seperate CheckRayz Leaderboard Poker Tours. We'll have the main CheckRayz Poker Tour --- which all players will be eligable to participate in.
We will additionally have a CheckRayz International Poker Tour. This tour will be for our non-US players. The International Tour games will take place at the poker rooms that no longer accept US Players, but CheckRayz has maintained a relationship with. Rooms such as Kiwi Poker and Noble Poker will be the home of these poker tournaments. Additionally, these games will take place during times better suited to our international marketplace.
Our first CheckRayz International games will take place January 8th at 3pm EST at Kiwi Poker and will be a $5+.50, $100 added buy-in. We'll follow that up on January 9th at 3pm for a $50 freeroll for those who participated in the buy-in. The International Group will have their own leaderboard, eventually - and will help contribute to the overall growth of the CheckRayz Network.
As for the main CheckRayz tour... all will be welcome to participate. We will be using rooms that all players have access to. Our Bugsy's Club League will continue under the main tour and be a league within a league.
I'll talk more about this as the days progress. Have a good 1!

BPT Grand Final Coverage |
We're a bit under six hours until the start of the Blogger Poker Tour Grand Final Event. Each of the seven tournaments in the second season of the Blogger Poker Tour have been about leaderboard points. Register, play, go as deep into the tournament as possible, to accumulate as many leaderboard points as possible (and as an added bonus, finish in the money and tap into the $500 prize pool for each tournament). Do more "away from the felt" to refer players, which racks up more leaderboard points.
And throughout this second season, 188 BPT participants managed to accumulate leaderboard points. The chase is over, we're down to 20 players - the top 20 on the BPT Leaderboard. Gone is the $500 prize pool; there's no more leaderboard points to be had. This is it, what we've all been playing for - the Grand Final - the Quest for the tourney seat in the Aussie Millions... 20 of the best players on the tour, and there can be only one.

Blogger Poker Tour Grand Final$30K in prizes, a trip to the Aussie Millions. The Blogger Poker Tour - only at Poker.com!.
Today there will be over $25,000 worth of prizes awarded as a result of this Grand Final Event and the Blogger Poker Tour.
Players finishing 16th-20th will get a "second chance" of sorts, as they'll be awarded a Grand Final Coupon, which is redeemable for a grand final tournament of one's choice at Poker.com - to compete for a seat in the Aussie Millions, WSOP, WPT.
11th through 15th place will receive a complete poker.com chipset and poker.com playing cards.
Breaking through the top ten, the fourth through tenth place finishers will receive a special edition 4 gig poker.com Ipod Nano.
BeerGuy note: I received this prize for my finish in season 1's BPT Grand Final --- sweet prize, I must say!
3rd place receives a custom built poker.com/blogger poker tour six foot poker table, made by Keystone Poker Tables, which by the looks of it seems to be right down the road from the BeerGuy (or at least in the same area code... hmmmmmmm...). The winner will also be given the option to customize certain aspects of the table.
Second place receives a custom built 8 foot poker.com/Blogger Poker Tour poker table, again custom built by Keystone Poker Tables. The winner will also be given the option to customize certain aspects of the table.
And of course the Grand Prize for the 1st place finisher of today's BPT Season 2 Grand Final will receive round trip airfare to Melbourne, Australia, a $10,000 seat in the Aussie Millions, which is being played at the Crown Casino. Hotel accomidations, $2500 spending money and a poker.com/BPT prize package also will be awarded to the Grand Final Champion.
It doesn't stop there, by the way... A second "major prize" will also be awarded today as well. The Blogger judged as providing the best coverage of this season’s Blogger Poker Tour will be flown to Melbourne, Australia, to cover the Aussie Millions main event on behalf of Poker.com. This winner will also enjoy all of the benefits and perks of being a member of the Poker.com team, with 8 nights accommodation in the Crown Towers Hotel, a private freeroll in the Crown Poker Room and invitations to official Poker.com parties and the Australian Open Tennis.
Best of luck to everyone. I'll be checking back throughout the day and remember... be gentle at the Grand Final... I am, after all, the new guy.
Pre-game Shoutouts
Before the Grand Final gets underway... I want to take a moment to acknowledge some BPT peeps...
Actually, to start out, I think it's appropriate to first acknowledge everyone who played in, participated in, and embraced this Second Season of the BPT. Lots of time and effort and blogging and poker playing has taken place during this second season, and I am proud to have been a member of the community with each of you. Here's to the BPT Community, may it continue to prosper!
Second, a huge Poker Pub toast to Shane, our Commissioner of the Blogger Poker Tour (beerguy note: I did not figure out how to spell Commissioner, nor did I use spell check, copy and paste when you're in the right place sometimes does wonders). Shane did a phenominal job of putting up with us, keeping the tour organized, compelling, and real, not to mention his 5am walk through, coffee in hand on tourney days. Without him and the rest of the poker.com crew, the BPT doesn't happen. Here's to Shane, his hard work, and dedication to making Season 2 a success!
Thirdly, not that I am trying to open up a wound... but I have to give it up to the bubble - Rahaboss. He was 3 points away from making the Grand Final. OhioMike - event seven winner (hosted by your's truly) ran the table and just barely beat him out for the final spot - just cracking the top 20. Here's to breaking the bubble next season!
If I mention Rahaboss, I have to also mention Quackpot. He didn't bubble, but he was 1 referral away from Grand Finaling... Each referral was worth 20 leaderboard points...
Here's to Grand Finalists - Skinski, Irongirl, imjusthere4thebeer (referral leader), Kufolem, ZowieZ, natsdad, JayNYC, EgonOlsen, and Pearlsnapman, who each made at least one referral to the BPT this season.
Additional shoutouts to Caroon (3 referrals), gohabs1234 (6 referrals!), bergeroo, Sexygirl (5 referrals), actyper (3 referrals), drawdeadcom (3 referrals), thepurdle (2 referrals), and all others who have made referrals to the Blogger Poker Tour this season. Here's to taking an active role in molding and growing our community!
Next, a shout out to the hosts of the Blogger Poker Tour this season. Thanks for working on the organizational and marketing end to make this tour happen!
And finally, to our Grand Finalists... Each and every person today will walk away a winner. Best of luck (and skill) to all. Here's to one hell of a Grand Final!
Stay tuned...
Personal Thanks
Geez, the "new guy" seems quite thankful today... and rightfully so, I guess... He's part of this great Blogger Poker Tour, has a great family, and a great support group in the stands today. So, a special thanks to the greatest kids in the world, Abby n Zack... and to the greatest support group that money cannot buy, the members of CheckRayz.
Also, a special thanks goes to Mitch for causing me to lose faith, when he sucked out on my hammer drop...
Good luck and see everyone at the Grand Final!
Tourney Time
We're about ready to go and just now getting our seats...
Here's the link for an up to the second Grand Final Chip Count. Blinds will begin at 5/10 and progress every ten minutes. Starting stack for this event is T5K.

Un-fing-believable... |
I am still sitting here, roughly 12 hours removed from that horrible beating... totally in disbelief. 1 word... un-fing-believable! Look, forget in the last post I said one of six cards would help me. I know it was five cards... That's not the point.
The point is, well... the point is... Look, I should not EVER lose with the hammer when I drop it, period. And now that I have... well, I guess now I have to question everything I once believed to be real. Thanks Mitch! Thanks for the wake up call...
No advertisments today, in mourning of the BeerGuy's hammer drop gone wrong...
The two-fing-seven offsuit is supposed to be the strongest hand in poker. And in the interest of fairness, I've never went to a showdown with the hammer and lost with it. I can really only conclude that live poker is rigged. I mean how else do you explain such a beating? Mitch had to have had access to the algorhythm or something in the human shuffler. Or maybe the dealer was giving him signals. Mitch was the host, after all. Or maybe it was a pocket cam that he had access to?
Even so, I'd think that between my playing the strongest hand in poker AND I've not even mentioned Chuck F'ing Norris was protecting my chips. Sure, Mitch had a ninja... big deal. Everyone knows Norris trumps Ninja, period...
So, what next? Where do I go from here? I mean, next thing you're gonna tell me is that some things do actually occur 90% of the time... or or or... that the US is going to be the only country still not on the metric system, right?
I know, you're gonna say that people are going to sell their poker blogs and turn them into... nah, that's just ridiculous. No one sells their poker blogs.
All I know is that I've not lost with the hammer since the modern sack era of football ever! And now that I have... well, I guess I have to re-learn the game of hold'em, because what I once believed to be true now no longer is. So, I guess I'm a newbie here... I'm going to have to teach myself to play all over again. Start from scratch, if you will...
Unfortunately, I don't have the time to train between now and "the big game" (Blogger Poker Tour Grand Final - Saturday 3pm --- pregame begins at 5pm Moscow Time - happy hour). And, unlike Mitch, I'm a true athlete and won't juice up to enhance my performance on the felt. So, I guess the Grand Final is the place! I'm gonna learn to play all over again, and what a great training ground that will be. 19 quality players and the new guy. I wonder if I'll have beginner's luck?
Until then...
Mike

Sick... |
5 handed (two tables of 5), 11 person live tourney (homegame). Starting stacks 700 chips. Blinds are 25-50, which is level 5. Pot opens to 150. Small blind calls cleanly, big blind folds. Flop comes 8c-7s-5c. SB bets out 225 into the pot of 350. Raiser comes over the top all-in. SB counts chips, has roughly 150 or so behind if he calls and loses, which he does in fact call with little thought.

SB turns over JJ. Initial Raiser turns over the two seven not suited... Turn comes a 2 of spades, which was one of 6 cards that could have helped your's truly. The river delivers a jack (one of 8 cards that could have hurt your's truly), which effectively sucks out on the hammer, sending your hero to the rail. Sick I tell you, just plain sick!

I should also mention, Ohiomike asked me to mention that 'in addition to being the first one eliminated in event 2, he had a "shitload" of outs and the nutflush/straight/overcards to the guy who pushed with 9-9 to win the pot.' --- I'm predicting he'll be far from the first one eliminated on Saturday.

PureChaos - "Poker.com has show to be a very respectable company, and demostrated several times to me that they are above par."
PearlSnapMan - "I'm simply a low limit player but where do these guys come up with some of their moves?"
OhioMike - "Made 20th by 3 points, so it ended up that I had to win the event to get enough points."
Lauradm - "But you got to admit, 2 consecutive final tables is pretty good." --- BeerGuy note: 2 for two in final tabling is awesome. You're one to watch next season for sure!
Joey aka DamRiver - "Somebody talk to Shane about the next upgrades possibly having the feature of removing sitters..." BeerGuy note: Agreed! I like the deep stack, but unfortunately, sitouts also benefitted.
Wade79 - "I am happy to say there were 3 5th Street Forum members in the top 10 and Hacksaw and Dangermouse just missing the final table."

Last Call - Poker Pub Live Coverage of BPT Event 7 |
9.15am... Once again, we're starting early... tailgating. But no worries, we don't have a drinking problem here at the Poker Pub Poker Blog --- after all, it is fifteen minutes into happy hour in Moscow right now and I'm all kinds of wound up about hosting this event seven of the Blogger Poker Tour - Poker Pub's Last Call.
Admittedly, I was extremely pumped about being the first host of a newly added game, Omaha Hi/Lo. The upgrade did not roll out in time, unfortuantely. Now the game is deep stack no limit texas hold'em. 5000 chips to start on our normal blind schedule. This style of game benefits the technician, as it allows for one to be far more creative in their strategy.
Additionally, did I mention the launch bonus on me? I'm putting up my host bonus. Launch me, satisfy the additional criteria I've set up to collect the launch bonus, and you have a better than xscrewballx's snowball's chance in hell of making the grand final.
Here are the important places to go before Last Call Starts...
1. Grab the Poker Pub's Last Call password
2. Make sure you're in compliance for collecting the launch bonus.
3. Head over the the official BPT Forum and find the Poker Pub thread. Talk smack!
4. Get drinking!

20 bloggers will make it to the Grand Final. $30K in prizes will be awarded. One skillful blogger will run the poker tables to represent Poker.com! and the Blogger Poker Tour at the Aussie Millions!
I'll be back throughout the day with more tailgating coverage of the Blogger Poker Tour's - Poker Pub's Last Call Event.
9.45... I've certainly been known to really mess up my simple math, but assuming that we have roughly the same number of entries we had last week, and taking into consideration launch bonuses, the top ten on the current leaderboard have secured a spot in the grand final. I believe the top 13 have, but as I said... I'm not a math major. I'm certain on the top ten though, assuming that we remain around the same number of entries as last event. Sitting at 98 entries currently, it appears as if that assumption may be correct, if not a bit optimistic.
10.15... Interesting leaderboard matchups and notes... If the tour ended right now, referrals would be the difference maker in who is in and who is not... Caroon leaped three spots into the last grand final spot with three referrals, giving him 60 referral points.
Additionally, did you see the log-jam at the bottom of the bubble?
19. Egonolsen, our season 1 grand final winner who represented the BPT and poker.com in the 2006 WSOP Main Event, has 1 referral (20 pts) and 450 leaderboard points overall.
20. caroon - 1 referral (20 pts) and 445 leaderboard points.
21. Hacksaw2000 - 0 referrals and 445 leaderboard points.
22. kdollar00 - 1 referral worth 20 pts and 444 leaderboard points.
23. MTLDon - 1 referral and 436 pts
24. Rahaboss - 433 leaderboard points.
To me, this is as exciting as watching the drop zone play out in the Premiership. Speaking of the drop zone, my boyz have West Ham United, who is in the drop zone, facing religation, tomorrow. Why is it that I'd not be surprised to see us barely squeak through this with a draw? I'll also be pulling for Everton to knock Chelsea down.
Frustrating sidenote, blogger is currently having issues with their comments feature. I use haloscan - does a phenominal job of filtering spamming commentary, so I am not affected, however, it sucks as I am going around reading and commenting on other's blogs.
11.00am... Visiting blogs, saying hi, wishing GL and mentioning the code to some who it applies to.
11.30... 101 peeps now entered. I see some notable names missing. Hopefully, they'll be registering.
1.00pm... 106 registered for the 3pm start time. I've visited everyone's blog in the top 50, left messages and wishes on many of the blogs. I think I'm going to pre-make dinner for the kids. With this being a deep stack tourney, I envision it lasting a bit longer than reasonable dinner time. Fortunately, the one and only thing I can make well is spaghetti and I can pre-make it.
Word of caution, the younglings will not be here next weekend for the grand final, though they've been here for each of the seven events less the rescheduled one.
Speaking of the younglings, I will take this opportunity to brag that my six year old twins are perhaps the best behaved children on the planet, bar none. It's amazing as to how well they listen and do not get into anything, even when my back is turned. 1 word - HOMETRAINING (being a single Dad with 50/50 custody, being organized and having disciplined children is of paramount importance)! Here's to daddyz lil angels, Abigail and Zachary!
This is the twins after their kindergarten school play at the end of last school year. More updates after I get dinner made, when we'll get back to talking poker and BPT.
2.00... if i don't make it to your blog to wish you luck... Best of Luck!
2.20... Currently, there's 108 registered. I believe I've visited at least that many blogs today from BPT members. By the numbers, this puts us around the size of the house of poker blues tourney, which means that if my math was correct earlier, the top 13 are secure, and perhaps even the top 15... Both launch me, AND final table, and you're pretty much guaranteed a spot in the Grand Final...
Commercial Break --- Because I'm the host, and I'm blogging on my blog, I'm gonna take this opportunity to throw yet some more shameless self-promotion out there. I own a small poker website, called CheckRayz. We orgnaize and broker freeroll and money-added poker tournaments. Registration for CheckRayz is free. I invite everyone to join and come Play free poker with CheckRayz.
2.30... Here's the link for the up to the minute chip count for BPT event 7. And additionally, here's the BPT Leaderboard. I have mine open to help determine who may or may not be playing desperate...
2.45... 112 registered right now. Good luck, good cards, and good skill to all. Remember, grand final trip is on the line, in addition to the normal $500 in the freeroll!
2.50... I plan to follow those close to the bubble today for my coverage. Hopefully a few of them will be grouped on the same table to make my life easier, as I only follow 2-3 tables... and not very closely, when I am playing in the early rounds.
table assignment - host table... me, playspoker, phreaux, schzol, killashandra, luckylulo, bardiya, ohiomike, redeyed030, abstratto.
Bubble table 1 - skinski, luvthegame, sweblackbird, armbarsalot, kufolem, newfie25, lauradm, prokrind333, mtldon, zowiez
BubbleTable2 - hacksaw20, egonolsen, kanyezee, iamsolitary, rockthefella, blacktyson, mada1970, brunsie, Ossssss
I'll b looking in at some of the other tables as the game progresses... Best of luck to all!
3.00... 5/10... the increased starting chip count seems to have allowed everyone to survive the first hand...
3.08... not that i am holding my breath, but did i actually get enough starting chips so that 10% of the field doesn't bust out in round 1?
3.09... teanter doesn't disappoint and goes out at the buzzer.
3.15... 10/20... Bubble table 2 breaks down... switching to the Cawtbluffin, neobahamut, rahaboss, actyper, riley31, cerberi, brunsie, muratore, xxrockinxxd, tartip table.
3.16... 10/20... tartip tries to make headlines by pushing 4320 chips allin preflop utg. The table correctly folds AA, KK, and 2-7 to tap's ridiculous preflop raise.
3.20... 15/30... is it my imagination or is the donk of a host seeing a lot of flops? 4 players now eliminated by round 3... guess the blinds were pressuring?
3.25... Jaynyc, the hottest player on the tour right now, moves in as the early artificial chip leader...
3.28... 15/30... imjusthere4thebeer pushes allin on the river, but not called.
3.35... 25/50... Rahaboss pushes, brunsie stands down in battle of the bubble 1.
3.36... 25/50... Leader eliminated in a big hand...
