BeerGuy's Agenda between now and Wednesday |
It's gettin real close... Under 1 week until I am on the plane leaving Pittsburgh, stopping in LA and then straight to Melbourne for the Aussie Millions. There's seemingly so much to do and such little time to do it... I'm really not complaining though - not at all, as a matter of fact. I am very much looking forward to this opportunity of mine and plan to make the best of it.

Between now and then, I have lots to do... I expect that I'll be playing very little poker between now and Sunday, as I'll be spending quality time with the twins. We plan to watch some football and play our hearts out. This trip will mark the longest amount of time I've ever been away from them. The longest I've been apart from them prior is when they go to their mother's house (we have shared custody of the twins). So, this will be an experience - being away from them for over ten days.
On the work front, I have tourneys to enter into the server, as we have lots of freeroll poker tourneys and money-added buy-ins with some sweet overlays on the horizon while I am away... And additionally, the CheckRayz League at Bugsy's Club... All this stuff to tend to and such little time.
Additionally, I have to pack, test drive and surely update the laptop (I am borrowing one, as I am not generally a fan of laptops).
I imagine I will make another blog entry or two, but no promises...
So, until then, head over to CheckRayz to check out the tourney schedule, subscribe to receive the Poker Pub in your email... and thanks for supporting!

Quick CheckRayz Update |
I'm counting down until I head to Australia to cover the Aussie Millions. That, however, does not mean that CheckRayz won't have some freeroll poker tourney and sweet overlays in our buyin poker tournaments while this is all going down.
We're going to resume CheckRayz league play at Bugsy's Club. Rumour has it that we're going to have Wednesday-Friday league play starting this Friday. $2+.20 is the rumoured buy-in...
Additionally, there is going to be some more action at poker4ever, two freeroll poker tourneys, as a matter of fact! And also a BeerGuy in Aussie Tourney of some sort at poker.com. 2007 is the year CheckRayz goes big! Keep reading, there's more...

CheckRayz League at Bugsys Club News... |
This is the last week for our first ever CheckRayz League at Bugsy's Club. There's still time to enter. Tourneys will be played Monday, Weds, and Friday this week. At the end of the week, a league champion will be crowned. First place pays $150, second pays $100, third place pays $50. Click to view the current CheckRayz League Leaderboard. With one week to go, it's still anyone's game.

Additionally, the actual CheckRayz Leaderboard Poker Tour race is heating up. Including the three league matches, there's four more for this final half of 2006 tour. Look for a leaderboard shootout announcement to come really soon, as well as a match to determine the 2006 champion. As I said, more on this in the coming days...

CheckRayz League Leaderboard Explained |
A question was asked as to how leaderboard points are assigned in the CheckRayz League at Bugsy's Club. I'll explain that right after the break.
Follow the link if you're looking for the password to the blogger poker tour event - Poker Pub's Last Call.

OK, the rules for the league leaderboard read as follows:
For all events points will be scored on the following basis:
Points are scored in relation to your finishing position, and prize money
won. Last place in the tournament will receive 1 point and 1 point will be
awarded for each finishing position above this. So in a 100 player
tournament the winner will receive 100 points, second would receive 99
points and so on downwards. Players will also receive points for any prize
money they get in the tournament. So if 1st place in the tournament paid
$200 then the player would receive 200 extra points as well.
In other words, $1 = 1 extra point.
So in a 100 player tournament, the winner would receive 100 points for
finishing first and 200 points corresponding to the prize money won for a
total of 300 points.
Translated to the event on the 11th, there were 20 entrants. First place ended up paying $39.50, thus the first place winner was awarded (first prize in dollars + the reciprical of finishing place) = 59.5 leaderboard points. Second place would have received 19 for the finish, plus 23.7 because that's the prize for second place from monday, for a total of 42.7 points. Third receives 18+15.80 and fourth receives 17 points, because no cash multiplier would have been awarded as that's where the cash bubble begins.
Norman, if the math is off, let me know... I believe it is dead on.
Remember, freeroll tomorrow at Poker4ever... password is on the checkrayz site - game is pot limit omaha hi/lo...

BPT Event Seven - PokerPub's Last Call! |
This Saturday, 3pm EST (AKA Poker.com time), the Poker Pub Poker Blog is throwing one hell of a party at poker.com, the home of the Blogger Poker Tour.
For starters, if you have a blog and you're a blogger, there's still time to join the blogger poker tour. Why would you, as a blogger who has a blog, want to join... you ask? Simple... Cliffnotes read: $500 freeroll, great poker play, two bloggers are going to the Aussie Millions, more prizes (all totaling $30,000+, as a matter of fact), fun, a strong sense of community, and it just makes sense to play. Tell them imjusthere4thebeer sent ya!
Moving along, I have some news on my Last Call event and a password... so keep reading.

I'm sad to announce that the original plan of having Last Call be a pot limit omaha hi/lo game has been cancelled. Poker.com made a tough decision and had to roll back the release date of the latest upgrade. Thus, a plo8 game is no longer possible. I know this disappoints some. I find it unfortunate, despite not being an omaha player nor a plo8 player. We will manage though.
In it's place, the Commish and I have decided that we'd go with a deep stacks NL Hold'em tournament. That's right, if this is last call, we're doing it right. 5K in starting chips, normal blinds. The over-under is still 5% of the field going out in round one of the blinds, so do not let the deep stacks fool ya. Deep stacks benefits the technician, so be ready for some great play.
This then brings me to the launch bonus... The change of tourney greatly impacts how the launch bonus affects a player. Originally, the bonus was going to be split amongst everyone who won a piece of the pot. In hi/lo, that would normally be two or more players, unless someone scoops. Now, with moving back to hold'em, it's probably going to be one player winning the launch bonus... unless of course, I run the table from start to finish. By the numbers, I am expecting close to 200 players competing in this final event. If I am close to accurate, then it stands to reason that launching me alone can bring a new player near the top 20. Parlay a strong finish, maybe even a final table, and they're all but guaranteed a top 20 finish to the tour and thus a spot in the grand final.
So recap, launch me - imjusthere4thebeer - score my host points... But wait, before proceeding on, I do in fact have a couple stipulations. I've learned my lesson and do not give away a free lunch... No sir/ma'am. Here's the deal. Launching me makes you eligable for my host points. Upon my launch, I will go to your blog. I need to see two things.
1. You've made a post of some sort (and substance) regarding the Blogger Poker Tour within the past seven days of the event. This means, you've posted at least once about the tour between 12.01am on Friday 8 December to 11.59pm on Friday 15 December.
2. The Blogger Poker Tour banner is both in proper working order (I can click it and get to the BPT page), and displayed so that my oversized monitor and I do not need to scroll down in order to find it. When we send traffic your way, I want them to know you're part of the tour!
Finally, I'll go back to your blog at the end of the day on Saturday (11.59pm EST). By then, you've had to have made a second post on the BPT event. It is at this time that I shall give Shane the OK to issue you my host points. And by this time, you've earned them.
As always, there will be complete coverage of Last Call here at the Poker Pub Poker Blog. And natually, the coverage will be live.
Here are some more Blogger Poker Tour Resources, for your convienance:
1. Unofficial BPT Search Engine code (to add to your blog) - notify me if your site or blog is not yet listed here.
2. BPT Blogroll - I will manually update and scrub this list sometime after event seven (no need to contact) - stay tuned. Feel free to use the code for your websites and blogs.
3. Join the blogger poker tour - tell them imjusthere4thebeer sent you.
4. The official Blogger Poker Tour Forum.
5. Laura posting a photo of her training for Last Call before I even had a chance to request it!
6. The password for Blogger Poker Tour event seven: Poker Pub's Last Call is in fact... lastcall.

For starters, just to let my CheckRayz'rs know, I've not forgotten ya, I promise. In fact, tomorrow right here on the Poker Pub Poker Blog, we will have a special edition of the Friday Mailbag - back by popular demand.
The biggest question in the minds of most of the CheckRayz'rs is... "Mike, where the hell have you been?" That question, I won't make you wait to tune into... I'll answer it right now, after the break...
Right now, the Beer Guy has many an iron in the fire. In fact, it's safe to assume there are too many irons in the fire. In no particular order, here are some of the many things I have going on:
1. Maintaining CheckRayz, which includes setting up tourneys, finding money, answering email and marketing... among other things. Yes, last three tourneys will be put into the leaderboard DB tonight.
2. Writing for the Poker Pub, which includes uncovering a story or figuring out wtf to write about.
3.
4. Supporting the "Aussie or Bust" mindset, where I'll accept myself being no where other than Melbourne, Australia come mid-January.
5. Working on one of the six books I've started but not come close to being finished (and yes, I am talking about writing a book, not reading --- we all know I
6. Reviving my soccer "career."
7. Running my weekly charity tournaments locally.
8. Raising the twins.
9. Maintaining some sort of personal life.
10. The Blogger Poker Tour.
10. Everything else not mentioned (eat, sleep, etc).
So yes, I'm quite busy... or is it unorganized? "Yes" is the correct answer, busy being unorganized. So in any event, something has to give here. And, I think my decision is to make only cameo appearances on the virtual felt until after the Super Bowl. Safely assume I will be playing event seven and the grand final of the BPT. Also safely assume I'll appear in one or two CheckRayz events between now and the end of the year. Otherwise, unless it's moving me towards Aussie in January, I probably will not be playing in it - that includes the cash games. I will be writing here regularly and focusing on some modifications to the CheckRayz site, but otherwise, I'm done til after the SuperBowl, because I need the time in my schedule to persue other interests at the moment.
More tomorrow on the Friday mailbag. Moving on...
Pot Limit Omaha Hi/Lo tipses...
As promised, some PLO8 resources.
1. FeliciaLee - Pot Limit Omaha 8 or better resources --- note: I wish felicia would continue to write. I miss her commentary and blogging.
2. O8poker - strategy site.
3. PLO8 key concepts
4. Skinski talks a bit of PLO8

So, in two weeks, the BeerGuy is hosting a Blogger Poker Tour Event. Before you say anything,
Anyway, I need some help from the peeps who frequent the Poker Pub. I'm in search of quality Omaha Hi/Lo advice. It seems that not only am I not very well versed on the game, but many others who are members of the BPT are also in the same boat. Oh, I almost forgot to mention... CheckRayz will also be holding at least one Omaha hi/low tourney in December... Double the incentive to seek advice, right?
Edit (add 9.15am): We've started a thread on the Blogger Poker Tour Forum that is discussing the PLO8 game that we're holding. Non-BPT members are welcome to register and participate as well! Also, if anyone out there is interested in starting a blog, be it poker related or non-poker related and would like to either let me know or ask for my help in getting started, drop me a line.
Also... if anyone has any such PLO8 advice or resources, either drop me a line via the comments section, catch me on messenger, post in the BPT forum or send me an email...
Thanks much!

For starters my thoughts: The Blogger Poker Tour event six was great. I think the biggest story of the tournament is that JayNYC made yet another top twenty five finish. For the record, he did not start until event three, placed 24th in that event. Followed it up with an 18th place finish, then a third... and now this week 7th. If he's not the hottest player on the tour right now, and odds on favorite to be playing in Aussie, I'm not really sure who is.
Second, it's disappointing that one or two people attempt to hijack the tour and whine about things, as stated in my post yesterday on the Blogger POKER Tour. Especially from someone who puts themselves out there not just as a blogger, but also as a journalist... to link a forum thread to the thought that "other bloggers are not happy either" (about event seven being pot limit omaha hi/low), when in reality, there was one negative comment on that thread --- (but even that comment wasn't all that negative). Furthermore, that thread was in support of event six and just got a bit off track! My advice, go back to the school of journalism, learn to seperate fact from opinion, learn how to express the difference between fact and opinion, and finally... if you don't like it, simply don't play. Quit whining, nuff said...
Now onto "what 'they' had to say" about event five of the blogger poker tour:
Two from Skinski at the House of Poker Blues:
"Evil has been on a huge roll at the tourneys lately and yesterdays BPT was no exception...
"And to think that the next game is hi-lo omaha ....This is evil's game of choice folk , so BEWARE !
AstinaGuy - "after a beautiful saturday paintballing and drinkin with some mates i was ready for another blogger event!"
Hacksaw over at the 5th st forum blog - "...(*^)(^_(&_)(*_)&(&)(^&$##*%*(^(&&^..." --- beerguy note: I assume someone sucked out...
Beerguy note number two --- does only a few of the top players blog in nearly real time? continuing on...
Joey over at Eat, Sleep, Poker - "...I've gone to the breaking point now that if poker.com didn't have such great online support or offer so all these great promotions, I'd dump them"
Bolcs - "I wanted to make it to top 5, so I get more points, but it's okay too. Now a little light came up at the end of the tunnel..."
Paul being "made famous." --- way to hit your goal! haha...
Quote of the day so far... Lightning36"What a game. Even if you play perfect poker, you can still get beat if the poker gods are cheering for the other player. I guess that is why we love this game so much ..."
Well, not even two minutes later, my daughter calls and totally hijacks the quote of the day on something not poker related... in case you didn't know, I have twins that are six yrs old. This morning, my parents took them bowling. My daughter calls me to tell me all about it. She's quite a talker, so she is chattering away and then she asks:
"Daddy, what are you doing?"
I tell her that I'm talking to her...
Then she asks, "Well, Daddy... are you sitting down or standing up?"
Why is that the quote of the day, you ask? At six years old, that question is cute... Any older, and she has some news to drop on ya, and it ain't good... You're pretty much needing to be sitting down for it.
And finally... Wise and Foolish"I’ve resigned myself to instant death in the Blogger Poker Tour
. . . it’s inevitable."
Hope everyone enjoys the reading...
Mike

Shane did an entry earlier about this being the BLOGGER Poker Tour, when he was citing that bloggers who have a blog and actually blog are what makes up this tour. I think he did a great job of bringing that home. Now here I am, preparing to host event number seven. I'd however, like to touch on another part of that same title. It's the Blogger POKER Tour.
I know we all love hold'em, for the most part... On December 12, poker.com is rolling out some of their new games - stud, omaha hi/low, razz, draw... you know, other POKER games.
Originally, this game of pot limit omaha hi/low was supposed to be irongirls' event. Poker.com, however, was not ready to roll the new games out when she was hosting. Knowing that, and knowing that the event I was to host would coincide with the roll out of the new games, it makes complete sense to host such an event.
Without naming names, or building links... This is the Blogger POKER Tour... not the Blogger Hold'em Tour. And either you're ok with that... or you're not. I think it's a shame that one or two people would whine and complain, citing conspiracy theory, or how unfair it is - specifically the one who was whining about the host on the host table today...
This is a fun tour, a positive tour. And while everyone is in fact entitled to an opinion... if you do not like the event, don't register... If you do not like hosts getting a host bonus, don't play... it's that simple...
We have two weeks... I'm not an omaha player, and surely not an omaha hi/low player either. I'll be looking for, and providing omaha hi/low tips that I come across on the net. Also, I believe I have a CheckRayz Omaha game on the calendar for anyone who wishes to give it a test run.
This is a positive tour, let's keep it that way.

I don't really have any one thought in mind this morning for what I want to talk about. Also, I'm not sure I feel up to making 50 million posts... so I guess I'll just ramble on and on topic hopping... This can get me back into the habbit of using the bold subtitles too...
That being said, match day 2 of the CheckRayz League at Bugsy's Club is tonight. Match Day 1 featured 26 CheckRayz'n poker players. Will there be more tonight? Be there at Bugsy's Club 9pm... The password for Bugsy's Club is on the tourney schedule page of the CheckRayz site.
Moving on...
Thoughts on Freerolling
I am considering either cutting back on freerolls again, or putting some sort of temporary "restrictions" on them at select poker rooms. For the second event in a row at Poker4ever, three or more of the top ten players are not members of CheckRayz --- or at least not tracable members.
Poker4ever is one of those poker rooms where passwords seem to be passed out more freely than... well, passed out freely. I need to come up with a method to prevent this from happening going forward. Ideally, we need more members to grow. To do so, we must spread the word, but at the same time it is not ok to freely distribute the passwords to the tournaments.
The reason I require log-in on the CheckRayz site to access the passwords is to keep the tournaments closed to our CheckRayz Poker Community. Giving passwords out takes away from the sense of community. So, stay tuned for further measures to maintain our community.
Continuing...
Blogger Poker Tour
The Blogger Poker Tour Event six is this weekend. So far, we have 97 blogging poker players registered. I suspect Skinski's record from event five shall be surpassed.

We're getting the ball rolling at CheckRayz. This week, we're holding five tournaments in 5 days. Of the five poker tournaments we're holding, three of them are free to enter, paying out a cash prize (yes, free cash)! Bugsy's Club and Poker4ever will be the home to these freeroll and money-added poker tournaments.
Monday (today) and Tuesday, CheckRayz will be holding freeroll poker tournaments at Bugsy's Club.
Wednesday, we're back at Bugsy's Club, and starting our 11 tournament league within the league. Yes, you read correctly... We have our main CheckRayz Leaderboard Poker Tour. We are now also holding a league, or a tour at Bugsy's Club. 11 tournaments, all of which count towards both the CheckRayz league at Bugsy's Club AND towards the CheckRayz Leaderboard Tour.
The top three in the CheckRayz League, after the 11 tourneys will win $150, $100, and $50 respectively, courtesy of Bugsy. Don't miss out.
Thursday, CheckRayz takes the Leaderboard Poker Tour back to Poker4ever for a free poker tournament. Once again, no cost to enter, and cash prizes to the winners.
Then, Friday, we head right back to Bugsy's Club for the second leg of the CheckRayz League.
While I am busy pimping free things, event six of the Blogger Poker Tour is this weekend. As always, the Poker Pub Poker Blog will be providing free, entertaining coverage of the tournament. Be sure to stay tuned.

We have just over 1 month left on the CheckRayz Leaderboard Poker Tour of 2006. The first two legs of the tour crowned Clayshooter and Reelcrazy as champions, respectively. There is still plenty of play scheduled for the final leg, and even more to be scheduled.
Next week, there are two freerolls (Monday and Tuesday). Additionally, we begin our CheckRayz League at Bugsy's Club, which is a league within a league. The top three of that league receives $150, 100, and 50 respectively. These league matches also count towards CheckRayz Leaderboard points.
There will be more on the CheckRayz Leaderboard in the weeks ahead. My guess though is that one would want to appear on the top quarter of that board to be eligable for anything we may be holding, so hang in there, score some points and thanks for supporting!

"They say" that it's neither polite, nor wise to tell secrets... or to brag about a good thing when you've got something sweet going on! I once had a friend of mine who used to swear up and down that every girlfriend he ever had (at that present time) was HORRIBLE in the sack. When he got older, and married, he admitted that the reason he would say stuff like that is so none of his friends would be enticed to make a move on his woman. He figured if everyone thought what he had was not the bomb, no one would want what he had - why brag, why call attention to it, why risk ruining a good thing, right?
Well, apparantly I am not that wise and not nearly that disciplined. I have to tell all you Pubbers, I've got a great thing goin on at Poker.com. And by great, I mean really f'ing great! Let me just run down the features and benefits real quick-like.
Soft Ring Games
First of all, soft games... speaks for itself. Second, speaking of ring games, there's a wide variety of ring games available to pad the bankroll. You can find regular games most of the day from .05/.10 NL to $5/10 NL. The fixed limit side still needs some work, as I've only really seen games up to $1/2 limit.
Lots of Sit n Gos
Additionally, Poker.com has a wide variety of sit n go poker tournaments for your choosing, be it satellites, shorthanded or full tables, they have what you're looking for if you're an SnG enthusiest.
Did I mention the soft play?
Freerolls!
Why do I feel like I just captured everyone's attention? Oh, I see... the word free up there in freeroll, gotcha. So here's the bottom line with this... They have a sh!tload of freerolls. Here's the rundown...
Every three hours, a new player freeroll. I'm not a new playa there, so people like me... can't get in. These new player freerolls are a great way for the new
They pretty much have a regular "all play" freeroll every two hours as well. This too helps to
I'm not done talking free stuff yet... Monday through Friday, poker.com have a $1000 daily Freeroll. Earn yourself 1000 comp points in the previous 3 days and play the roll...
Every Saturday, there's a $2K Freeroll. Once again, 1000 comp points over previous 72 hours gets you a ticket.
Sundays are even better... Sundays, well, with the exception of the last sunday of the month, but we'll get to that in a second... 2500 comp points in the previous 168 hours gets you into the weekly Sunday $10K Freeroll! Talk about padding bankrolls...
The last Sunday of the month, for 5000 comp points, you play for $50K --- in a freeroll. Let me say that again... 5000 comp points = $50K freeroll coupon. This happens every last Sunday of every month at Poker.com. This tourney is enough reason alone to bring me to their tables... As I write this, there are 627 players registered for that tourney... Everyone's starting equity, right this moment is nearly $80!
Best kept secret on the net for the tourney enthusiest
Finally, one of the biggest overlays in the land, is the Sunday $15K Guaranteed. Overlays galore! Buy in directly for $60 or win your way in via satellites. This Sunday tourney is by far the most value added regular tourney out there!
Multi-tabling Friendly
Poker.com use their own proprietary software. From personal experience, I can tell you that they are in tune with our needs as poker players. Hell, if I didn't know any better, I'd say between the ability to show one card, rabbit hunt, and to muck or show at showdown, they already have the best bells and whistles of any poker room around... But I can't stop there.
My favorite feature is the ability and ease to multi-table. One may either cascade the multiple poker tables, or place them in Grid Mode, so that up to four rooms can show at once. That way, you never lose site of the action, you don't have any overlap at all, and you're 1 click away from busting a donk. If you don't believe me, take a look below. I have two tables up, and the best hand in poker at both of them all at once... And yes, I dropped the hammer in both spots...
Don't forget...
Don't forget, Poker.com is also home to the Blogger Poker Tour, where 2 BPT participants will in fact be heading to Melbourne, Australia the Crown Casino's Poker Room for the Aussie Millions.
And by the way, Poker.com takes players from everywhere... No discrimination. All are welcome!

I just looked at the CheckRayz Poker Tourney calendar and it's not my imagination, we have two freeroll poker tourneys and two money added poker tourneys coming up withing the next week.
Tommorrow, we start out at 32 Red Poker, for our $3+.30 buyin with $50 added to the prize pool. This will, of course, be a rebuy/add-on type of tourney. Password is on the CheckRayz website under the poker tournament schedule and passwords area. As always, you must be logged in to access the passwords.
Now for two tourneys I'm really excited about. On Monday, CheckRayz debuts at Bugsy's Club. I've taken a look at their poker software and I am REALLY impressed. For starters, they have ring games available at all limits, which is a HUGE PLUS in my book. Second, the software is quick to respond. I don't have to sit there and wait forever like at some unnamed poker rooms.
Finally, did I mention that these poker tourneys we are having with CheckRayz at Bugsy's Club start us out with 10,000 chips each?
Monday, we're having the CheckRayz $200 freeroll at Bugsy's Club (remember 10,000 starting chips for all you donks out there). We're going to follow that up by holding a $5+.50 $200 added freezeout poker tournament at Bugsy's club. Once again, 10K in poker chips to start! This money added poker tournament will take place on Wednesday at Bugsy's Club. Did I mention that Bugsy's club has a $25,000 freeroll poker tournament every month for players who accumulate 1000 or more points? No?
Surely then, I mentioned that they're offering a $1000 added tourney with a WSOP Seat also in the prize pool to anyone who deposits $300 or more between now and October 22nd, right? No? Well, I did mention the deep stacks tourneys we're having there, didn't I, and that they're paying out a 100% first time deposit bonus up to $600? Phew, good... thought I was losing it for a second there.
Next Friday (a week from tommorrow) we hit Poker4ever with a $100 freeroll poker tournament. By the way, there's still plenty of time to qualify for the $500 promo freeroll at poker4ever that we're holding. 500 points gains you a pass to the $500 freeroll. Hope to see you there!
Busy seven days for us. As always, I'll keep everyone abreast regarding the U.S. Poker Situation. Speaking of which, I have another room to add to the List of U.S. Friendly Poker Rooms.
