Hand 1 - Charity tournament
Blinds - 50 - 100 10 ante 32 players started, 24 players remain... 8 handed, avg stack 2666
UTG (3500 chips) raises 2.5 times the blinds,
button calls (1700 chips),
I call from SB (4500 chips) with 2 ♠ 7 ♦
BB also calls (roughly 900 chips)
Pot contains: 1080
Flop comes: 2 ♣ 10 ♣ king ♥
Action:
I check, BB checks, utg bets out 500. Button folds. I suspect BB is going to either fold or go allin, so I raise to 1200 - which is enough to both cover him and not make it appear as if I'm trying to force him out. Additionally, I'm interested in seeing how the UTG plays this. He thinks and calls cleanly.
Pot contains: 3480
Turn card is the 7 of ♥
I check, being reasonablly certain he's going to bet here again - especially considering there are now two flush draws on the board, not to mention the straight draw. All of which have not been filled on the turn. My suspician is that he will bet here hoping for a fold.
He does in fact bet out, and bets 800. I again raise to put him all in. He postures and someone at the table mentions I'm playing the hammer. He thinks some more and says, "We're boys, he wouldn't drop the hammer on me." He concludes I'm either on a straight or flush draw, so he calls with top pair, ace kicker.
River's a blank and the hammer correctly holds up. I go on to finish fourth place...

1. I borrowed a laptop from my mother to take to Oz with me next week. On the laptop, I ran over here (to the Poker Pub Poker Blog). It never occured to me that pages look differently on different screens. I'm going to have to do something about that, as my inside sidebar seems to push down on the laptop, while it shows right on top on my screen. Anyone know how to make it appear the same on all size monitors (Mitch, lil bro?)?
2. It's one of those weekends where it "seems" as if my reads are right on, however, Miss Variance is being a little bitch. And by little bitch, I mean that when I set, others catch their flush, yet, when I am drawing I either fail to complete, or get nailed by redraw... not that I am playing much this weekend or anything (cough pokerstars - download, play, deposit, chase easy to obtain (in my opinion) deposit or reload bonus with me).
3. Back to the laptop... it won't recognize the battery. I'm wondering if it will recognize if I pimp slap it...?
4. The Phil Hellmuth blow-up on that Late Night Poker show was not broadcast as advertised after SNL. They went to Stargate SG-1 and then that offbeat cinema show. I was hoping to watch it on the tele, however, Iggy has the entire incident, in three parts on his blog. It's hilarious.
5. I just caught a draw against this 44/8/2.78 douchebag. Shame on him for thinking I lay down easy - oops.
6. Building my bankroll IS part of the preperation phase of
7. Said Douchebag continues to call me with "any ace" --- and then king queen to my ace king... oops twice over?
8. I had a blast playing the 5th St. Charity Ball at poker.com yesterday. I don't think LadyLuck appreciated the hammer drop over her nines... I was in fact pot committed with the strongest hand in poker. In fact, the hammer paid me off three times, and I lost all of it in two quick hands... Guess I should just value fold til I get the hammer from here on out.
9. Speaking of the hammer, I am serious about getting a hammeresque tattoo. Anyone feel up to drawing something up?
10. My bud Dan has a wealth of info on his poker, fishing and other vices blog. Great read, and gets the BeerGuy's 5 keg rating. Go check his blog out.
11. That's all for now...

Yesterday I spoke of it becoming quite fashionable to drop the hammer in the home games of ours. I totally dropped the ball, as opposed to the hammer in our charity game last night. Unfortunately, I wish I would have...
I sat UTG, look down and see it... There she is... 2-7 not suited. I think, and start laughing. If I'd have been able to keep a straight face, I'd have played it. So, I muck the strongest hand in poker... SB raises slightly, BB raises hard, SB calls. AA v J10... Flop delivers a 2, turn a seven, river a two... Although the bubble burst, I'd have taken down the tourney had I dropped it correctly. I finished third.

So, for those of you who don't know... In addition to running the CheckRayz site, I also run a what is now a bi-weekly local game for a charity here in my hometown. And of course, when I do something, I pretty much must travel first class, else not travel at all. Not to toot my own horn, but...
I KNOW that the game I put on is the best game within a two hour drive. This includes any of the casinos. Everything from the quality of chips, to the tables, to the environment, to the tourney structure, the organization... I know we're the best game in town, bar none.
So anyway... moving along here... Last night, we started the second season of our charity tournaments. Season one, we had a Grand Finale Freeroll. I'm uncertain as to right now what we're going to do outside of the regular tournaments, but we'll surely come up with something.
New to this season is the blinds structure. I haven't been a really big fan of my blinds structures during the first season despite the several times I have tweaked them. This time around, I started everyone with T2500... and blinds progressing from 10-20 up. Additionally, when the final table formed, I back the blinds up to 10% of the average stack. Though, not being a math major, I miscalculated that... Enough about that though... Point is, I was trying to accomplish getting play both early and late in the tournament. Mission accomplished... The tournament ran 5.5 hours, which in reality, was about an hour and a half longer than what I was aiming for... I was shooting for a four hour tournament.
As for playing... I had a great time donkin it up at the tables... Got heads up with Vanessa on what could have been a bustout hand for me. I raised with pocket tens to 4x the blinds. She had just took down a big pot and was in the BB, i believe. She calls. Flop comes Q-Bull$hit-9, if memory serves me correctly. I continue the bet, she calls and has this "look" on her face. We check the turn and a queen comes on the river. I believe the turn was a jack. The point is, I was rather certain she had a monster. She of course bets on the river and I folded, certain she had me beat and badly.
Few hands later, she was flopped flush over flush and ousted from the tourney. Shame too, as she was a lot of fun on the table... (right, V?).
We backed the blinds up on the final table to
Despite the error, we're still by far the best game in town, bar none... Next time we'll get it right.
Writer's block today... sorry.
Mike
