It's safe to say that I've lived a full life thus far. I've had the opportunity to see different parts of the world, I've done the college gig, the family thing, and have been occupationally diverse. Several times over, I've encountered great change in my life. When encountering or enacting such changes, I historically choose to never look back and live without regret...
Despite being busier now than I've ever been, I have spent the past year reflecting on my life. One of my goals was to take some time to look back, to reflect on my life - perhaps to learn from my past, maybe even to take a moment to enjoy it even. What good is experience if you don't look back upon it?
That being said, one of my goals is to reconnect with some of the people who are significant to my "past lives." I bumped into one of those people online this past week and want to share a story that has me absolutely rolling...

From 1992 to 1996 I was enlisted in the Navy. From Jan - June 1994, my squadron was attached to the USS Saratoga. We spent the majority of our time floating outside of Bosnia. Because it was the decommissioning cruise for the "Sloppy Sara," there were several ports-of-call that we "should" have hit - Haifa, Turkey, Greece, Spain, Italy... Circumstances in Bosnia, however, cancelled the majority of our liberty.
We did, however, manage to make it to Spain - Palma, Spain more specifically, which is where the Beer Guy turned 21 (for the first time).
After spending the majority of the day on the beach, enjoying tasty beverages from the Daiquiri Palace, the boys n I set out for a night on the town. While out and about, we came upon a store that sold football jerseys. I picked up an FC Porto jersey, and my buddy Jason selects a Scottish national team jersey. Drunk as all hell, sun burnt - the rest of the guys abandon Jason and I.
Jason and I of course, are not your run of the mill sailors... It was no secret as to why he and I were named numbers one and two in the old Great Northwest Chapter of the Brewster Club. When we were out, we were out for the duration. None of this going home early shit, even if we were blistery, sunburned, feverish and incoherently drunk... No biggie, we pushed on to the club. We arrive at this club, though my memory betrays me as I do not know which club it was, and immediately we begin chatting it up with two young, attractive British ladies.
Bright young ladies they were, they quickly pick up that I'm American. They proceed to complain about all the dirty American Sailors that are carrying on, acting like a bunch of asses, being ridiculously drunk and what not. They move to end the conversation when the light bulb goes on...
Ever so quick on my feet, I inform them that we (Jason and I) are not in the Navy. In fact, Jason isn't even American! No, not at all... He was my foreign exchange student from Scotland (glad he bought the football jersey), and that we were travelling around Europe together in celebration of our respective 21st birthdays.
These chics were so not having it when they thought we were in the Navy, but now that we're not... We're students vacationing and having fun, just like them - we were in! They're buying us drinks, we buy them drinks, great drunken conversation - laughing. Everyone's buying the story. In fact, everyone's so sold that Jason himself not only believes he's from Scotland, but he also somehow was touched by God's hand and can now speak Scottish!
He reminded me of the Scottish answer to pro wrestling's Tito Santana, who would give interviews in English and then break off into Spanish. Jason would gab away, and then say something in "Scottish."
Things are going real well at this point, until Jason turns a bit green. I had a deal brokered with one of the girls that we'd all go back to where she was staying and continue the festivities when Jason blurts out, "Mike - I'm going to be sick, we have to go back to the boat - I think I'm going to die."
He makes it to the bathroom before letting loose projectile style. No amount of drunken smooth talking got me out of that one. The girls knew they were tricked - tricked into talking to the drunken sailors they swore they wouldn't be caught dead talking to...
Jason and I did in fact manage to stumble back to the ship in one piece. And though it was frustrating not sealing the deal with the ladies, it was a most entertaining 21st birthday - so entertaining that I've turned 21 every year on my birthday since then...

Happy New Year's Update and stuff... |
I did mention that I'd be posting once a week or more. I guess I failed to mention said posting would kick off after the first of the year? So, on that note, Happy New Year!
I suspect the burning question in everyone's mind (at least the one or two peeps who drop in on the Poker Pub Poker Blog) is "BeerGuy, where the hell have you been?" Perhaps (no promises) I'll answer that... Keep reading.

For starters, after UIGEA, the online business previously known as CheckRayz was all but dead in the water. The douchebags in congress took what was a nice home based business and drove it into the ground. That being said, I had to seek out opportunities outside the household. Unfortunately, said opportunities keep me out of the house for the majority of my time. The free time I do have (all be it miniscule) is earmarked for family.
That being said, I finally turned the lights off at the old CheckRayz site recently. The lights were left on for a while, but really... no one was home. CheckRayz does still exist, but no longer in it's online form. If anyone's ever in the neighborhood, feel free to give me a shout - I'll give ya directions to the Club. Here, the lights are on five days a week, tourneys run often and the NL game is quite juicy. I'm also starting a league to send one of my friends to the 2008 WSOP. I look forward to the challenges that this task presents.
I'm working to get back into soccer after my unprescidented tenth retirement. This may be my last comeback, however. The back is aching and I'm no longer feeling like the 21 yr old I've been for the last 13 or so years. The team, Beer FC, still exists, but it too has taken on a new form.
Additionally, I'm planning to go back to school for the fourth time, as well as take on a task of being a guest writer for a local online publication.
2008 is a rebuilding year for your's truly - evolving with the times as conditions dictate. I look forward to said evolution in the times to come. Here's to the new year. I wish everyone the best of fortunes, and may variance in life and on the table be on your side!

BeerGuy Update |
Warning --- There may be very little poker content here.
Further Warning --- This content is actually written, as opposed to the two lines by me I've put out lately.
Final Warning --- Reread the first two warnings, as I'm serious...
Yes, the rumours of my death are false. So the magic questions become, "Mike, where the hell have you been and wtf have you been doin," I strongly suspect. And even perhaps one of those infamous "what's the plan," questions too.
Well, keep reading and perhaps we'll find out those answers and more.

First, "where have I been".
Well, for starters, I had to get one of those job things --- you know, outside the house and what not. I've been working long hours for shit compensation and it's been wearin' a brotha' out. Actually, it's not been that bad, however, it has been that bad when it comes to the twins. It's been difficult to find a spare minute to spend time with my children, especially considering my shifts have been mostly falling on the times they'd be out of school and with me. That makes me cranky.
Fortunately, as of this week that's changed. They've adjusted my hours to better accomidate my family life. I'm now both less cranky and more able to spend time with "Daddyz Lil Angels." We've got to spend quality time this week, the twins and I have.
Ironic that UIGEA was written under, among other things, the battle cry of protecting children and families; yet somehow not only I was able to spend more time with my family before UIGEA's enactment, but also as a result, I was able to better watch over and protect (read: parent) over my kids at the same time. Interesting, isn't it?
What have I been doing?/What's the Plan?
Well, if one was paying attention, they'd have heard above that I'd been working a lot, and thus could conclude that that work is what I've been doing, but that's not the whole story either.
There are other things going on in the BeerGuy's life as well. I'm in the process of establishing 1 poker and one non-poker related business. Both will be established with silent partners, though one of the businesses will have less silent... more like "quiet partners." I'm looking to launch each of these biz's in June or July, unless of course I get "the call" to make an appearance of some sort in Vegas in June/July for some unknown reason.
So, those of you reading between the lines, it's not in my plans to work for someone else the rest of my life. It never has been. My plan has always been to be my own "boss" in one form or another.
In other news
In other news, I've been playing phone tag with Michelle ("ChipTricks") for the last two weeks or so. She called me up a bit ago to let me know she is alive. We've been just missing one another by about five to ten minutes. I'm hoping to get ahold of her this evening - maybe in between games.
Speaking of games, the "monthly game" is today. Rumour has it that Mitch's ninjas will be returning from their secret mission and will be capping at the "monthly game." Of course, I prefer to think that the ninjas are returning only after confirming Chuck Norris retiring from protecting my hand to cashing in a WSOP Circuit Event in Atlantic City.
So, now that Chuck has in fact pulled his services, I'm now looking for a new protector of hand. The "Endgame Poker Pooch" has offered to temporily guard my hand. So, we'll have to see if that works out. I've also sent out offer sheets to the ferocious rabbit from the Quest for the Holy Grail, Cowboy Bob Orton to acquire his pink cast, Roddy Piper's Coconut, and of course Slimer from Ghostbusters, though I hear he may have hired Jamie Gold as his agent. I hear they're both kinda difficult to work with.
Needless to say, I'm still interviewing/taking suggestions for my new hand protector, so we'll see.
Well, that's all for now. Kids and I are off to go bowling. I've long since retired from the bowling world, however, the twins get really combative competative when they throw the bumpers on the rail. Game on!
More soon.

Time off to regroup... |
This week has been the first "normal" week I've had in quite some time. I'm two weeks removed from Australia and I think my body has readjusted to the timezone, though I know I'll never adjust to this cold weather. No matter how long I live here, I won't ever get used to winters. My natural inclination is to just fall asleep... hibernate even. Unfortunately, life does not always allow for such luxeries.

I've cut back significantly on poker play and time spent writing/on the computer this week as well, as many of you might be able to tell. I've been spending every waking moment with my kids. I missed them while in Oz, and can't get enough of them now. We've been having Sorry tournaments every night this week. Last week too. Zack was champ last week, and this week Abby has captured the title. Daddy's next?
So, while adapting to "normal" it would seem as if I've neglected my blog just a little bit. No worries though... I suspect I'll be back to writing regularly again very soon. I've just needed time to downshift, decompress, and regroup. While doing so, I managed to accomplish two big things this week. I grabbed myself a full time job, as I suspect the party is over with regards to online poker... Additionally, I re-enrolled in school. This job is surely nothing I'm married to, but is flexable enough so that I can let it work around my life. School is set to start up in April and I'll be going straight through until Sept of '08.
The funny thing about this whole school gig... I've started school twice. Both times, I've quit without completing the degree. I landed the job I was looking to land each time, so why bother, right? This time around... no matter what, I'm goin wire to wire. If I've been able to quit smoking, I should also be able to finish school, it's that simple.
Moving on --- next week, look for more memories and photos from Oz, and also some CheckRayz news... specifically dealing with our February plan. Also, keep in touch with the Poker.com blog and the BPT home page, as my Aussie Wrap-up should find it's way there within the next few days...

More preparing and thoughts... |
To turn 21 again... I just love it when the googlebots or some random soul comes wandering into the Poker Pub via some off the wall search query that I had not necessarily intended or thought of... The search term was "thoughts on turning 21," which of course... I check my stats somewhat regularly, I had to go figure out where I was ranked and then re-read the story, because I just have to know these things...
***long winded rambling coming on, which is probably not poker related...
I'm glad I did too, because for one, I am kinda disappointed insulted that some person's account of turning 30, and turning 50 are ranked above my ranting on how it feels turning 21 again.

G-Bomb mission aside, I am glad that someone stumbled upon that story, because it reminded me of a few things... Most importantly, it helped me put this upcoming Australia trip into perspective. No, I did not need to be refocused or adjusted on living up to my screenname either... And surely not motivated to properly carry on the tradition of the Beer Football Club, who does in fact have a championship game tonight, defending their crown vs the Coach's team tonight. A win makes us 5 time champions. Since the formation of Beer F.C., and taking the squad to the A-League, this will be our franchise's tenth indoor season. Of those ten seasons, we have captured the FFSP Indoor A League Championship of Soccer 4 times. Not including tonight, we've played in five championship matches. Tonight makes six championships in ten seasons. We have failed to make the playoffs twice. Two times we've been ousted in the opening round of the playoffs. Not too terribly bad, considering the level of competition.
OK, I've plugged my soccer team, though I've not updated the website there in ages... and yes, it's an eyesore. I've g-bombed my 21 post and my soccer site. So, now back to my original point...
*** I told you, mindless rambling...
The turning 21 post put Australia into perspective. In reading that blog entry, it called to mind, that I am not a writer, I'm a story-teller... By writer, I mean schooled, by the book, journalistic type of writer. I am much more effective providing first hand anecdotes from my personal point of view than I am playing the formal who, what, where, when, why, how "type of game."
Now granted, I typically get all of the information in what I am writing, it's just not formally structured as such and is typically far more animated than a more formal piece. My point is, my strength is my story telling... and I am glad I was reminded of that today... because I turn 21 every year.
I may not get another post in between now and the landing (as I set up to drop the hammer on an unsuspecting table on pokerstars --- had to fire the second in order to make that happen). For some reason, my claims that I'd be neither posting nor playing much have not really worked out... I think I've played more poker this weekend than I have in the last month or so combined.
Speaking of poker, does CheckRayz have a poker game tonight? Nope, it's tomorrow... We have two on the agenda... A $50 freeroll for anyone who had played in the $5+.50 $100 overlay at Kiwi Poker, and the $50 CheckRayz Player's Club Freeroll, which is an "all play"... well, by all, I mean all who are in the CheckRayz Player's Club. In fact, a complete listing of Freeroll and money added poker tournaments with overlays are available, passwords and all, on the CheckRayz site. I had to get them in before Aussie.
Speaking of Aussie, poker, and beer... I need to get moving...
Have a great day everyone... See you from the Crown in a few days!

1. I borrowed a laptop from my mother to take to Oz with me next week. On the laptop, I ran over here (to the Poker Pub Poker Blog). It never occured to me that pages look differently on different screens. I'm going to have to do something about that, as my inside sidebar seems to push down on the laptop, while it shows right on top on my screen. Anyone know how to make it appear the same on all size monitors (Mitch, lil bro?)?
2. It's one of those weekends where it "seems" as if my reads are right on, however, Miss Variance is being a little bitch. And by little bitch, I mean that when I set, others catch their flush, yet, when I am drawing I either fail to complete, or get nailed by redraw... not that I am playing much this weekend or anything (cough pokerstars - download, play, deposit, chase easy to obtain (in my opinion) deposit or reload bonus with me).
3. Back to the laptop... it won't recognize the battery. I'm wondering if it will recognize if I pimp slap it...?
4. The Phil Hellmuth blow-up on that Late Night Poker show was not broadcast as advertised after SNL. They went to Stargate SG-1 and then that offbeat cinema show. I was hoping to watch it on the tele, however, Iggy has the entire incident, in three parts on his blog. It's hilarious.
5. I just caught a draw against this 44/8/2.78 douchebag. Shame on him for thinking I lay down easy - oops.
6. Building my bankroll IS part of the preperation phase of
7. Said Douchebag continues to call me with "any ace" --- and then king queen to my ace king... oops twice over?
8. I had a blast playing the 5th St. Charity Ball at poker.com yesterday. I don't think LadyLuck appreciated the hammer drop over her nines... I was in fact pot committed with the strongest hand in poker. In fact, the hammer paid me off three times, and I lost all of it in two quick hands... Guess I should just value fold til I get the hammer from here on out.
9. Speaking of the hammer, I am serious about getting a hammeresque tattoo. Anyone feel up to drawing something up?
10. My bud Dan has a wealth of info on his poker, fishing and other vices blog. Great read, and gets the BeerGuy's 5 keg rating. Go check his blog out.

ironic |
This again is more of a personal post, so if that's not your bag, tune out now.
Yesterday, I spoke of not waiting until New Years to make resolutions. It's ironic... Ironic because usually, a short while after midnight, after drinking champaigne, swapping spit, saying good riddance to the old, and ushering in the new year; I typically excuse myself for about a half hour or so. It's during this time that I go through my telephone and send out individual happy new years wishes via text message. Sure, it is not terribly personal, but it is my way of reaching out to those I care about that I've not taken the time to keep in touch with over the course of the past year.
This has become somewhat of a tradition of mine. Sometimes, people call me right back. Other times, I get a return text message, and other times, I hear from the people a day or so later.
One girl in particular is typically on that list... a dear friend of mine named Tierney. She played on my co-ed soccer team, as I first met her through my best drinking buddy Sandy. Tierney and I immediately hit it off. God help us, but our minds worked very similar. She was brilliant, such a beautiful mind she had. We spent many a day and evening talking stuff that people did not normally talk about... Deeper, more philosophical and/or conceptual conversations were the norm with us. People often had a difficult time keeping up, as one either was on that wave length or they were not...
Anyway, fast forwarding a bit... she moved away a few years ago to "chase her dream." I admired that in her; when she knew what she wanted, she acted. It was then that we began conversing, for the most part twice a year... on July 4th and New Years Eve. I missed the 4th this year...
Yesterday evening, Sandy calls me... asks me if I've heard. Of course, I didn't as my head has been lodged up my ass as of late from a social standpoint. I'm assuming she's going to give me some great news - proposal, with child... something of that sort.
Turns out Tierney was in an auto accident on Wednesday night. Both she and her boyfriend died as a result of injury from said accident. Sadly enough, I'll be spending new years eve with her, but at the funeral home... not via our traditional phone conversation. T - I'm sorry I waited, you're always on my mind and a topic of conversation in the group... I can only hope you knew how beautiful and special you were and are.
Love ya angel...

Resolve |
Two things I have said come to mind as I write this post. First, I said that last post was most likely my last post of the year... I've also went on the record many times over stating I am against the whole new years resolution thing. If you want to do something, why wait for the New Year, right?
The other side of that coin is, why put off a resolution just because it's the new year, and thus fashionable, right? So here I am with a decision, wait til it's no longer fashionable to set goals to better my life, or start on the turn of the new year.
Actually, just as most things in life, this is not an "either-or" scenario... In fact, I have more choices than just wait or resolve at new years. I can make the New Years Eve Eve resolutions. In fact, I will, because that's what the BeerGuy would be inclined to do.

First and foremost, I resolve to learn from the mistakes I've made over the past 363.5 days. Trust me when I say that I've made a lot of them, and not just over the last majority of the year either. I've made a lifetime of mistakes. I'm probably a better person for making them too, but one would normally say such things in the eyes of failure, right?
No seriously here... it's perfectly acceptable to make mistakes... in life, in poker. Mistakes happen. To err is human. I'm human, thus I make mistakes. If I could resolve to be perfect, to plan and execute flawlessly every day, every time, I'd do so. I can't, however, deliver on such things. So, instead, I resolve to learn from my mistakes.
To learn from them requires me to have an open mind. It also requires me to acknowledge my error, face it, and look for a way to either not repeat it, or to capitalize on it in the future. Truth be told, a BeerGuy with an open mind is dangerous... Look out world!
Specifically, I need to identify situations that are not profitable or beneficial, and rid myself of them sooner - get away from those who do not have my interest at heart - fold bad draws... nuff said, you get the point - I resolve to learn from my mistakes.
Also, I am committing to improve upon my bankroll management skills, as inspired by Jerry - who will be going to Oz to represent the Blogger Poker Tour at the Aussie Millions. I've been good, but not great at managing my bankroll. Making this a priority will lead to both becoming a better player, and leading a better life. Thinking about the games I play - be it level or likelyhood for profitability, the activities I participate in (is the cost/potential benefit worth the investment of time, money, or heart) will do nothing but benefit me in the long run.
Finally, I resolve to breath... and to embrace the moment. I too often get caught up looking too far out or looking back, and don't necessarily appreciate what is going on right now, til after it's long past. Slowing down, taking time to enjoy myself is clearly in order.
Have a great new years celebration everyone!

Didn't you say...? What the...? |
Yes, I said live casino report... twice, as a matter of fact... "So, where's the reports, right? I know, you must be a losing player... otherwise, you'd freely report on the games."
Actually, I did go 0 for 2 this past week. However, sad to disappoint, I did not have losing sessions. I had no sessions at all, as a matter of fact. (More after the break).

This past week - one "bad beat" after another... but wait a minute, I do not believe in bad beats, only bad plays... Fair enough - two "misplayed hands" this week cost me live play.
First, the charity game and soccer night were one in the same. That left Tuesday open for me to do whatever I choose. I naturally chose to make a casino run. For a few weeks now, I've seen this bus leave from a shopping center up the road a bit. So, on Tuesday, I set the alarm, grabbed the bankroll and pushed north to hit the bus.
I board the bus and find out that we're heading to a smaller casino than the one I normally frequent when I play live. No worries though, as they do in fact have a poker room. I get there, only to find out that the card room is empty/closed. Additionally, when I start asking around, it seems that no one working during the day can tell me anything about their card room. It seems that I sit for five hours watching everyone play bingo and that ends my poorly played hand. No worries though, Saturday I am planning to go up too!
Saturday rolls around and the actor and I pack up for a 14 hour session. Our plan was to get there by noon and stay until 4am or we had no opposition, whichever came first. I considered shutting my phone off as soon as I got in the car, as I did not wish for anything to distract or de-rail my mission.
We talk strategy on the way up, passing the time in a productive manner. Five minutes prior to arrival at the casino, I hear this ever so eerie noise. For those who don't know, when my telephone rings, I have the theme song from the movie Halloween, so when I say eerie noise, I mean it.
I look down and mention to the actor that he's calling me. Of course, his house would not be calling unless it was an emergency. Sparing details, there was an "incident" and we had to turn around and head for home. Again, no live play.
I did manage to play at "the host's" house Sunday for a special edition of the "monthly game." We played .05/.10 NL for about 5 hours. We played at a full table, I was in the hole until the last hand, which I dug myself out of. I was at about a 55-60% saw flop rate. Of course, this table did not have the ideal players to implement that strategy, but no matter... I just wanted to have fun, throw some chips around and play... And play I did. I donked around and sucked out on the last hand to recoup nearly all my losses.
Charity game is tonight on the home front. CheckRayz League at Bugsy's Club on the virtual felt. I'm still looking into the answer about how leaderboard points are awarded, so as soon as I have that info, I shall pass it along to all of you.
Have a great day...
Mike

Turning “21” again… |
Well, its that time of year again. Sometime throughout this long weekend, the Beer Guy turns 21 yet again. Yes indeed, we’re in the middle of “Birthday Week.” So today, we’re in for a history lesson on the legends of the infamous Birthday Week as well as what is the deal with the whole “turning 21” thing.
For starters, I started doing this whole “Birthday Week” thing with my friends, as there were always one or two people who were “preoccupied” for the birthday celebration of a given group member. This seemed to be the case with every birthday celebration within the group. Someone, for one reason or another had something else going on, be it work, school, family, significant others, etc. So, we decided that if we made the actual celebration a week long gig, we’d be able to fit everyone in. For the most part, this worked out and was, by my own admission “in character” with everything we did. Any group that ran with me seemed to have a knack for “over-doing” things (read: we enjoyed beating a dead horse long after everyone else stopped). So, initially birthdays were celebrated as a one week event.
Over time, we noticed a steep increase in “goods and services.” Inflation was taking its toll on the price of things such as cigarettes, beer, gas (no kidding?), food, etc. So, it was decided that in the spirit of beating a dead horse and respecting the reality of inflation, we needed to expand birthday week to keep it real. In 1998, birthday week expanded to a two week celebration. This was the case until 2004, when the birthday week’s equivalent of the Federal Reserve Board of Directors met to discuss the state of Birthday Week. We collectively met to study birthday week and decided that in an attempt to “control inflation,” and to help “stimulate the economy” (not to mention bring balance to the whole birthday week concept), we unanimously voted to increase the duration of birthday week to three weeks. Celebration would commence one week prior to the actual birthday, pick up pace the week of, and cool off the week after.
As an added bonus, this pretty much ensured that we’d have some sort of “birthday week” going on every week of the calendar year. In fact, the logistics of a new member’s birthday week coming into the group is more important, perhaps, than the actual character of said applicant. We would often meet new people just trying to fill the calendar up when noticing an “opening.”
Now, my “birthday week” is a bit different than anyone else’s in the group. This comes as no surprise, given the conversation we had at one of the post-game watering holes about how I am the exception, not the rule in most everything we do. It should be noted that this is not because I am breaking the “rules of the group,” but instead because I seem to influence and enforce policy. A comparison was made to “The Godfather” of the group, as no one enters the circle without my blessing, nor do they “act out” without risking consequences set forth by yours truly. So, given that I am the policy maker, its only fair that I decide what we are celebrating when it comes to my birthday. I decided we were going to celebrate my “turning 21” every year. And yes, there is a reason for such a decision.
I did not get to celebrate my 21st birthday in the fashion most of “the other kids” got to celebrate theirs. Most peeps got to do the whole bar tour, 21 shots, etc. Not me, though I am surely not complaining. I turned 21 on the beaches of Palma, Spain. Turning 21 over there was not a big deal, as it was “legal” to drink prior to the 21 mark. Of course, we made a big deal of it. We hit the beach nice and early and made ourselves a nice “home base” which was roughly 25 yards from this place called the Daiquiri Palace. We had a waitress bringing us a different flavor of daiquiri every half hour. Water accompanied the daiquiri at the top of every hour. The “palace” was to the daiquiri world what Baskin Robins is to the world of ice cream. It was nice.
Well, correction… It was nice until we noticed the severe blistering from being in the sun entirely too long. Apparantly, its not the best of ideas for a bunch of peeps pulling duty on an Aircraft Carrier rarely seeing the light of day to hit the beach and soak up some rayz for more than 1 hour tops. Needless to say, we headed for lower ground (preferably to find shade of some sort) after receiving our 21st Daiquiri, thus hitting for the cycle. Everyone, less myself and Jason bailed, due to blistering in the sun. Jason was a tropper though. He and I purchased some aloe, and some replica football jerseys. Jason purchased a Scotland national team jersey for some ungodly reason, while I grabbed myself an FC Porto jersey. For some stranger reason, football jerseys feel a bit better on the burned skin than regular shirts do. Anyways, the Scotland jersey would come into play later in the evening. We hit a club called BCM. Jason and I were buzzing drunk 2-7’d (read: hammered). One of us was holding up a bit better than the other though, I suspect.
Across the room, we see these two babes, who I overheard mention something about Scotland. I “radio” Jason telling him to get into formation and stressed the importance of my wingman following my lead and not breaking formation under any circumstances. I introduce myself to the ladies and as I suspected, they immediately comment on Jason’s Football Jersey, asking if he’s from Scotland. Being both a man of principle and of honor, I tell them he is in fact from Scotland. Edinburgh, to be exact. He catches on and decides to play the role of a drunken Irishman meets hammered Canadian and slurs to them “you’re damn well bloody right I’m from Scotland, ey?” Its revealed at this point (I’m laughing too hard at his response) that I’m not from Scotland, but instead I am an American and Jason was my foreign exchange student. We’re “on holiday” tearing it up in Europe, and its my birthday. They “seem” to buy the story, at least initially and are thankful we’re not one of those “dirty sailors” that are ruining their vacation. It should be fairly noted that there were 2 U.S. Ships and a British ship in port at this timeframe, so they could have been referring to either one when they dropped the “them people“ bomb.
Anyways, they bought me a birthday shot. Jason reciprocated buying them drinks. We danced it up for a while, talking and dancing, dancing and talking. My wingman was doing me well. I admit he did go a bit overboard when he began speaking in what he believed was a foreign language. We almost lost him there, however I righted the course and said he was doing his impression of a drunken friend that he met when he was my exchange student.
Jason excused himself to the “W.C.” In his absence I was working on arranging the closing of the deal. I received the green light for landing, as we were planning to take off and go back to their hotel, as it was a bit “too loud” in the club. I radioed the wingman telling him we were ready to land. Instead of putting the landing gear down, Jason breaks formation. We start our final approach heading outside and towards their hotel. Its at that point I hear the last words I wanted to hear. Jason slurs (hick-ups included) “Mike, we have to go back to the boat. I think I’m going to die.” I try to cover for him, but that’s so not happening.
He breaks formation and clips my wing in the process. We’re going down, mayday mayday! We crashed and burned. The girls flipped and were not nearly as understanding as I thought. I enacted the one standard deviation rule, citing he has ancestry traceable to Scotland, and each of us hosted an exchange student at one point in time and we did not consider ourselves one of “those people.” No such luck. Crash and burn, live and learn, nice hand good game, total suck out, etc.
Anyways, that event combined with the absence of a “traditional” celebration in the U.S. led me to make up for it by turning 21 every year. We just celebrate my 21st all over again in traditional U.S. fashion. Really, until retirement age, there’s no meaningful birthday, so why not celebrate the anniversary of the 21st in the interim? Besides, there’s no better way to honor the memory of the survivors of the crash than to memorialize it forever in celebratory fashion. To keep score, I just add yet another roman numeral to the end of my stated age “21” and I’m within my one standard deviation rule.
Tonight, birthday week continues with SuperDonk’s “band” playing at one of the local clubs. This is sure to be an amusing event, as the thought of their “band” cracks me up. Monday, the group will be sitting outside overlooking the lake sipping on 50 cent drafts watching the sunset with the Beer Guy reflecting on life XIII years ago.

Scatter-brained... |
I just discovered that CheckRayz have two tournaments scheduled for tonight. First there is the CheckRayz-Celeb heads up poker challenge at 9pm EDT. At 10pm, we're at poker4ever. This was a scheduling error. I totally missed it - never saw it coming. I did not intend to have the tournaments on the same day, for those of you keeping score. I suspect my wide range of focus has caused me to be scatter-brained, and its showing.
My attention to detail has seemed to drop off lately. I typically work on multiple tasks at the same time with little difficulty. In fact, this typically plays to my advantage by having many things going on at once. One of my "known issues" is that I am easily "distracted." One of my friends once talked about how the universe works against him by nature. He "knew" certain things to be true. For example, when he was in a hurry to get somewhere, he'd hit every traffic light in town... and God help him if we were in road construction season. He was often in a hurry, needless to say. Additionally, in his spare time, he loved to read, though he was "always" interupted when he was in the middle of a good book. In fact, interuption after interuption would occur when he found his place.
So, being a logical guy, and a math major with a minor in philosophy, he saw the potential relationship between these two problems of his. He "knew" he'd be slowed down when in a rush, and distracted when in the middle of a good book. So to solve the time issue, he would bring his book with him when on the road. Of course, he'd hit every light/traffic jam in town. When this happens, he opens his book, quickly finding his place. This causes chaos in the universe as "the rules" state he may not read uninterupted, so the traffic jam imediately is relieved, thus he tricks the universe into getting him to his destination on time at the expense of missing out on reading a book he'd never be "permitted" to finish anyways.
I often do something similar. I know that I am easily distracted, as I said above. So, often when I am playing poker, I'll be blogging, or talking strategy to a friend, or scheduling a tournament, or working on a side project. I know if I am not multi-tasking, I will find something less productive to distract me... so I figure why not "pick" that which distracts? Over time, I get good at this and have three tables open, two IM windows, my blog, and four emails to poker reps all going at once. Did I mention I'm also on the telephone?
Yea, I'm taking on too much at once. Its time to slow down, relax a bit, and focus primarily on the main tasks at hand. Contrary to what I'd like to believe, there's a lot that can be accomplished in the 24 hour day. I lost track of the main purpose of the "controlled distraction," which was to productively control that which captures my "side" attention, to more of a distraction out of obligation (I need to get all of this done NOW!). My work is suffering, my game is slightly suffering, and now its right in front of me.
Time to re-focus... Nuff said.

Please excuse the mess... |
Please excuse the mess. I'm doing an impromptu move of the Poker Pub . The new location has quite a few more features that makes my life easier. That being said, I'll be posting both places for the time being, and eventually phase this one out, or keep both... not sure yet. In the interim, it looks like my posts got all jumbled together. Please excuse the mess.

"Bad Beat" on the derby... |
For the first time in picking the ponys, my "pseudo-scientific" method failed. Ass handed to me, nuff said...

Derby Day is here... |
Finally, (Kentucky) Derby Day is upon us. As per my "normal protocol," I've checked the weather, reevaluated my statistics, crunched them one additional way, and checked the current odds. Below you'll find my derby predictions, which barring a miracle/catastrophy, I'll stick with until post time. I got the majority of my handicapping in on Thursday, so as to avoid the hype. Here's where I take the hype factor, and some other things and combine them with the infamous "pseudo-scientific" method of mine. My assigned odds listed after pp and horse name, morning line odds followed by "current odds" (of close of advanced wagering on Friday night) in parentheses.
Win Contenders - Horses I believe to have a high likelyhood to be racing to first place:
11 Sweetnorthernsaint 4-1 (10-1, 7-1)
3 Keyed Entry 5-1 (30-1, 42-1) "the $42 dollar horse" perhaps? (handicapping reference)
4 Sinister Minister 5-1 (12-1, 5-1)
Money Contenders - Horses I believe to have little likelyhood of winning the race, but stand a greater than random chance of finishing in the money (second or third):
8 Barbaro 8-1 (4-1, 5-1)
18 Brother Derek 9-1 (3-1, 10-1)
9 Sharp Humor 10-1 (20-1, 25-1)
16 Cause to Believe 20-1 (50-1, 26-1)
All other horses, I believe have significantly less than a random chance of winning/finishing in the money.
How do you bet this?
Well, honestly I don't know how YOU bet this. I do know how I plan to bet this though, significant thanks to "chippy" for helping me carve this out into a betting plan that makes sense with respect to the "exotic bets."
For starters, all my win contenders will be bet accordingly. So, count on a ticket reading 11,3,4 win. The horses in that universe will also be bet to place/show providing they're overlays in my odds to the public odds. Additionally, my "money contenders" will get place/show bets if they're in overlay territory. I don't have them as legit win contenders, so I will bet them off as place show (in the money). Right now, assuming the odds do not change (they will), I'm betting 9 and 16 to place and show each.
As for the exotic bets, I was considering going with the superfecta, however, i think the trifecta is more along my comfort level.
11,3,4 with 11,3,4,8,18,9 with 11,3,4,8,18,9 will be my most likely trifecta bet, unless I for some reason bump one of the money contenders off the chart.
Additionally, I'll work through some exacta bets, with 11,3,4 wheeling through my money contenders list.
I do have a positive EV outlook on my races. I know which horses I like and more importantly why I like them. I'm also keeping my eye on the other horses, and understanding why the public likes them. Using the two perspectives, I've achieved my ideal bets. If the perfect race is run, I'm a winner (based on my figures, and assuming my "pseudo-scientific" method is dead on). If a less than perfect race is run, I'm at least playing the +EV ponys, the ones who I would play every time this race is run based on the information available right now.
Good luck and have fun betting the ponys.

Continuation Bet... errr - Post on the Kentucky Derby |
Well, numbers have been crunched... field sorted through, so here we are with my Continuation Bet, I mean post on the Kentucky Derby. I must have poker on the brain (surprise surprise).
Anyways, I did my pseudo-scientific number crunching and analysis and have assigned the following odds to the field (note: I'm basing my odds on as near 100% as possible, as opposed to the 137.61% handicappers are using for this race):
Here's how my analysis breaks down:
Group one horses - Win contenders (horses I believe have a very strong chance of winning the race, of which I assigned 5-1 or greater odds --- official morning line odds are in parantheses) - roughly 61% chance on my scale of moneying from this group:
4 Sinister Minister 3-1 (12-1)
11 Sweetnorthernsaint 4-1 (10-1)
3 Keyed Entry 5-1 (30-1)
Group two horses - Money Contenders (horses I believe have a chance of finishing top three, of which assigned odds between group one and group three odds --- official morning line odds are in parantheses) As a group, these horses combined get roughly 29% chance of winning, however, the only potential value plays I'd make are with Sharp Humor... Brother Derek gets just better than "random odds of winning" on my scorecard.:
9 Sharp Humor 8-1 (20-1)
18 Brother Derek 9-1 (3-1)
17 Lawyer Ron less than "random odds" of winning (4-1)
6 Showing Up less than "random odds" of winning (20-1)
8 Barbaro less than "random odds" of winning (4-1)
7 Bob and John less than "random odds" of winning (12-1)
Group three horses - Non Contenders (horses I believe have very little chance of finishing in the top three, of which I assigned roughly a ten percent total chance of any one of them finishing in the top three and did not bother to statistically represent my odds, as they're insignificant to me for my predictions --- official morning line odds are in parantheses) These horses have "significantly less than random odds of winning" based on my calculations:
16 Cause to Believe (50-1)
2 Steppenwolfer (30-1)
12 Private Vow (50-1)
14 Deputy Glitters (50-1)
20 Flashy Bull (50-1)
5 Point Determined (12-1)
10 A.P. Warrior (15-1)
13 Bluegrass Cat (30-1)
19 Storm Treasure (50-1)
1 Jazil (30-1)
15 Seaside Retreat (50-1)
That being said, providing the "perfect race" is run (see 2004 Kentucky Derby) I have the finish going down Sinister Minister, Sweetnorthernsaint, Keyed Entry. All three horses, in addition to being my favorites have significant value based on my card vs. the morning line (4-11-3 boxed). It should be noted, I've first turned this into a nine horse race, then I narrowed it down to five horses who I have assigned "better than random odds" of winning/finishing in the money. For these reasons, I only stated my personal odds on the horses who I assigned better than random odds of winning the race. Consequently, any bets I place will only contain those horses who I give better than a random chance of winning/finishing in the money.
Here we go, tieing this into poker now. It stands to reason that if I play only hands that have a better than "random" chance of winning, I'm only playing those hands in which I expect to win. Additionally, if I play them "well," I'm maximizing my profitibilty over the long term. In the short run though, the hands are not guaranteed to be profitable, especially considering the "perfect flop" does not always come down each and every hand. That being said, I don't necessarily expect the "perfect race" to be run. However, just like playing +EV hands, I've given myself the best chance of capitalizing on my winnings in the event a perfect or near perfect board appears... In terms of racing, I'm only betting on horses that are +EV in my mind.
These, however, are just my thoughts... I'm not a professional pony picker I just play one on the PP (Poker Pub). Feel free to discuss, ask questions, leave comments, request I be deemed insane, etc.

Offtopic: Kentucky Derby Thoughts... |
I can't go another day without talking ponies, given the Kentucky Derby is a few days away. The horses have drawn their posts and opening lines set. I'll be spending the next few days intermittantly "doing my homework," cruching numbers and assigning my own odds to the horses. I have a "hobby level at best" interest in the races, specifically the triple crown races, and I've been somewhat successful using my little handicapping formula, especially in the Derby.
I'd previously posted on the poker pub on my "uneducated derby thoughts," where I named three horses I was liking. Of which, two are in the derby, which is not bad for futures predictions without crunching numbers back in March. Point Determined (12-1), and Sweetnorthernsaint (10-1) are in, First Samuari is not. Back in March, Brother Derek was the favorite and he still seems to be at 3-1. I had no reason to not like him before, and do not now... however, without having crunched numbers, I'm still not able to get behind him in this race. We'll see though in the next few days when I crunch my numbers and put the horses to the statistical test.
The field is shaping up as follows:
1 Jazil 30-1
2 Steppenwolfer 30-1
3 Keyed Entry 30-1
4 Sinister Minister 12-1
5 Point Determined 12-1
6 Showing Up 20-1
7 Bob and John 12-1
8 Barbaro 4-1
9 Sharp Humor 20-1
10 A.P. Warrior 15-1
11 Sweetnorthernsaint 10-1
12 Private Vow 50-1
13 Bluegrass Cat 30-1
14 Deputy Glitters 50-1
15 Seaside Retreat 50-1
16 Cause to Believe 50-1
17 Lawyer Ron 4-1
18 Brother Derek 3-1
19 Storm Treasure 50-1
20 Flashy Bull 50-1
I'll be covering the Derby in greater detail over the next few days, as the "numbers" come out tonight that interest me. By Friday, I'll have my predictions.
As for tonight, the CheckRayz Leaderboard poker tour heats up with a $5+.50 $100 added tournament at River Belle Poker. Expect the A game.
