For any of you who wonder if the BeerGuy still has an obsession with "the hammer," here's your answer... The guy was steaming before that hand, due to another player playing at him. I decided to join in and call station my way to raking in the pot...

Hand 1 - Charity tournament
Blinds - 50 - 100 10 ante 32 players started, 24 players remain... 8 handed, avg stack 2666
UTG (3500 chips) raises 2.5 times the blinds,
button calls (1700 chips),
I call from SB (4500 chips) with 2 ♠ 7 ♦
BB also calls (roughly 900 chips)
Pot contains: 1080
Flop comes: 2 ♣ 10 ♣ king ♥
Action:
I check, BB checks, utg bets out 500. Button folds. I suspect BB is going to either fold or go allin, so I raise to 1200 - which is enough to both cover him and not make it appear as if I'm trying to force him out. Additionally, I'm interested in seeing how the UTG plays this. He thinks and calls cleanly.
Pot contains: 3480
Turn card is the 7 of ♥
I check, being reasonablly certain he's going to bet here again - especially considering there are now two flush draws on the board, not to mention the straight draw. All of which have not been filled on the turn. My suspician is that he will bet here hoping for a fold.
He does in fact bet out, and bets 800. I again raise to put him all in. He postures and someone at the table mentions I'm playing the hammer. He thinks some more and says, "We're boys, he wouldn't drop the hammer on me." He concludes I'm either on a straight or flush draw, so he calls with top pair, ace kicker.
River's a blank and the hammer correctly holds up. I go on to finish fourth place...

Edit: I was tired as hell when I posted that. I had a good bit more that I was wanting to add, but I couldn't keep the eyes open.
When I went into this game, I was fairly certain I was going to play "differently" than normal; well, differently than I normally play a CheckRayz game, at least. Although, it's not uncommon for me to drop the hammer with the 2-7 not suited.
That aside, it should be noted that I was caught playing hands such as 5d-3d, 8s-7s, and Ah-4d; and often to a raise. I was even inclined to raise with such hands. And truth be told, I'd sometimes call, other times reraise with these hands. If there was one thing I learned about tournament poker play while in the land of Oz, it was that aggression takes down pots. There were antes, they were sizable (last night at Bugsy's). For that reason alone, there was added incentive to raise pre and come out firing.
When the one player (I cannot recall who it was) raised over top of me to all-in, I had no choice, mathamatically speaking, but to call. I knew I'd be calling from behind and even said "shit, not what I wanted," but I had to call anyway.
Phillyd ended up taking down the tournament. He played very well... I think back to one critical mistake I made. On a raised board, I flop 2 pr K-Q-J. I bet out almost pot sized and he calls. My bet size was mostly random. I thought to myself I'd wanted to just end the hand and not really overcommit to it. I didn't want to see a ten or an ace on this board. Turn brings an ace, and philyd moves all-in. I thought and lay down my 2 pr. In retrospect, I should have put him on an ace (any ace) and made the call, but laid it down to a ten hitting the board.
Oh well, I failed to put him away, and thus I end up second. There's always tonight!
Speaking of tonight, I think I'll write more about Oz tonight, specifically I want to write about my thoughts on the second place finisher in the Aussie Millions - Jimmy Fricke.

1. I borrowed a laptop from my mother to take to Oz with me next week. On the laptop, I ran over here (to the Poker Pub Poker Blog). It never occured to me that pages look differently on different screens. I'm going to have to do something about that, as my inside sidebar seems to push down on the laptop, while it shows right on top on my screen. Anyone know how to make it appear the same on all size monitors (Mitch, lil bro?)?
2. It's one of those weekends where it "seems" as if my reads are right on, however, Miss Variance is being a little bitch. And by little bitch, I mean that when I set, others catch their flush, yet, when I am drawing I either fail to complete, or get nailed by redraw... not that I am playing much this weekend or anything (cough pokerstars - download, play, deposit, chase easy to obtain (in my opinion) deposit or reload bonus with me).
3. Back to the laptop... it won't recognize the battery. I'm wondering if it will recognize if I pimp slap it...?
4. The Phil Hellmuth blow-up on that Late Night Poker show was not broadcast as advertised after SNL. They went to Stargate SG-1 and then that offbeat cinema show. I was hoping to watch it on the tele, however, Iggy has the entire incident, in three parts on his blog. It's hilarious.
5. I just caught a draw against this 44/8/2.78 douchebag. Shame on him for thinking I lay down easy - oops.
6. Building my bankroll IS part of the preperation phase of
7. Said Douchebag continues to call me with "any ace" --- and then king queen to my ace king... oops twice over?
8. I had a blast playing the 5th St. Charity Ball at poker.com yesterday. I don't think LadyLuck appreciated the hammer drop over her nines... I was in fact pot committed with the strongest hand in poker. In fact, the hammer paid me off three times, and I lost all of it in two quick hands... Guess I should just value fold til I get the hammer from here on out.
9. Speaking of the hammer, I am serious about getting a hammeresque tattoo. Anyone feel up to drawing something up?
10. My bud Dan has a wealth of info on his poker, fishing and other vices blog. Great read, and gets the BeerGuy's 5 keg rating. Go check his blog out.
11. That's all for now...

More 2007 goals, tied into the Al post... |
When I was 18 and first moved away from home, joining the Navy, one of my plans was to get a tattoo of some sort. However, it seemed that getting a tat of some sort was entirely too fashionable a thing to do in the Nav... And as non-conforming as I was, I opted against inking myself. This of course, was before it was fashionable for every chic on the planet to have a tat on their back and ankle, and every douchebag to get barb wire around the guns (no offense to anyone who this may apply to in whole or in part now).

Anyway, I'll continue typing down here before I get my ass kicked myself in trouble. My plan then became to get a tat after I got out. Only, the problem was that I could not decide on what the hell to get a tattoo of... I am the most non-artsy person I know... If I attempt to draw something as simple as a stick figure... peeps will correctly ask "Dude, wtf is that?" Which makes the fact that my daughter is very talented when it comes to drawing absolutely amazing.
So, without anything jumping out at me, and lacking the ability to draw anything to save my life, I remained tattooless.
My goal for 2007 is to muster the courage to go get ink'd by end of the year. I now know exactly what tattoo I want. I'll give you a clue, it has to do with what year it is...

Sick... |
5 handed (two tables of 5), 11 person live tourney (homegame). Starting stacks 700 chips. Blinds are 25-50, which is level 5. Pot opens to 150. Small blind calls cleanly, big blind folds. Flop comes 8c-7s-5c. SB bets out 225 into the pot of 350. Raiser comes over the top all-in. SB counts chips, has roughly 150 or so behind if he calls and loses, which he does in fact call with little thought.

SB turns over JJ. Initial Raiser turns over the two seven not suited... Turn comes a 2 of spades, which was one of 6 cards that could have helped your's truly. The river delivers a jack (one of 8 cards that could have hurt your's truly), which effectively sucks out on the hammer, sending your hero to the rail. Sick I tell you, just plain sick!

Yesterday I spoke of it becoming quite fashionable to drop the hammer in the home games of ours. I totally dropped the ball, as opposed to the hammer in our charity game last night. Unfortunately, I wish I would have...
I sat UTG, look down and see it... There she is... 2-7 not suited. I think, and start laughing. If I'd have been able to keep a straight face, I'd have played it. So, I muck the strongest hand in poker... SB raises slightly, BB raises hard, SB calls. AA v J10... Flop delivers a 2, turn a seven, river a two... Although the bubble burst, I'd have taken down the tourney had I dropped it correctly. I finished third.

I'd say I have created a monster, but really... implying it's just one monster would do it no justice. First off, congrats to "the shirt" for winning his third tourney. He is now officially in the lead for the most wins. previously, he and I were the only two time champions.
Now, back to
Hand number one:
Middle position raises, caller in the back. Flop comes Ace five five. Middle position fires off a bet, that is called cleanly. Turn comes an irrelivant four. Second barrel fired, and is called. River is insignificant and a THIRD barrel is fired. Late position thinks hard and folds pocket kings face up, only to find out he's had the hammer dropped on him.
While said hand is being reported to me, at my table, and from the small blind, there's a call. "That one really agressive kid" had limped from the early position. I check in the big blind. The flop comes Ace, eight, eight. SB checks, I check. "That agressive kid" fires off a pot size bet. The small blind comes WAY WAY over top, inflicting a CheckRayz upon thee. I get the hell out of the way. The agressive one folds pocket sixes. And yep, you guessed it... "The Actor" drops the hammer. He dropped a perfectly exicuted slowplay of the hammer, actually.
I'd say it ended there, but I'd be lying. One of the newer players even got into the mix. She showed down to the river with the hammer because she just assumed that it was manditory to play and show that hand, considering how often she saw such ridiculous things.
It's safe to assume all of my friends are going to come down with carpel tunnel syndrome from excessively swinging and dropping the hammer. I do, however, anxiously await the day where it takes down a tournament within our group.

And yet again... As if QQ v AA was bad enough. Shortstacked, and in the cutoff I do first in with very short stack, push all in preflop with the hammer... 2 people call, and the guy with Ace 8 sucks out on me...
